  • Sul Ross State has been accepted for competition in NCAA Division II and will begin competing in the Lone Star Conference in July 2024, the school announced. The Lobos are charter members of the American Southwest Conference, but news broke of SRSU transitioning to D-II and joining the LSC in January. "We'll be attracting more students who will be able to continue to participate in sports after high school. It makes us more competitive on the field, and we believe it will increase enrollment and augment retention efforts," SRSU Athletic Director Amanda Workman said in the release. "Ultimately, our goal is to have all student-athletes graduate with a degree from SRSU," she said.

  • Sources have confirmed that Hardin-Simmons has finalized its 2023 schedule with the addition of a road game in Massachusetts against Endicott. The Week 4 contest gives the Cowboys a full 10-game schedule with non-conference games against Albright in Week 1 and at Wisconsin-La Crosse in Week 2. HSU will have a bye in Week 3. The addition of Endicott is a quality opponent for the Cowboys. The Gulls were undefeated during the regular season last year en route to securing the Commonwealth Coast Conference title and a berth in the Division III playoffs.
  • Sources have confirmed that Lamar has received a commitment from offensive lineman Thomas Le Boucher, who also held offers from UMass and Appalachian State. The Arizona State transfer is expected to be a key piece in the Cardinals' offensive line. A native of Saint-Augustin de Desmaures, Quebec, Le Boucher played at Independence CC before transferring to the Sun Devils.

  • The NCAA delayed implementing a new timing rule for Division III until at least 2024 after the DIII Management Council and multiple coaches raised concerns about player safety. The clock will continue to stop after first downs throughout the game in DIII this year, while it will only stop during the last two minutes of each half in Divisions I and II.

  • Blinn has added Kenyana Heard to its coaching staff. The former Midwestern State offensive lineman will coach running backs and tight ends for the Buccaneers. Heard spent last year as tight end coach at Butler Community College.

  • Former Houston St. Pius X standout, Stanley Asiegbu, announced his commitment to transfer to Mary Hardin-Baylor after spending the last two seasons at DIII Cal Lutheran, as first reported by TrueToTheCru.com. The 6-foot-3, 230-pound tight end also held offers from FCS schools Campbell, Lamar, Tennessee State, Robert Morris, and Alabama State.

  • Texas Lutheran released its 2023 schedule, highlighted by five home games. The Bulldogs open the season on the road against Wisconsin-Oshkosh in Week 1 and return to the road to meet former ASC rival Southwestern in Week 2. Then, TLU hosts its home opener in Week 3 against Ave Maria (Fla.). October will be a challenging month for the Bulldogs with a home game against Mary Hardin-Baylor followed by a road game against Hardin-Simmons before returning home to host East Texas Baptist for homecoming.

  • Report: NCAA denies UAC's waiver request: The NCAA has denied the United Athletic Conference's waiver to be recognized as a single-sport FCS conference, according to a report by Chris Vannini at The Athletic. What does this mean for the merger formerly known as the ASUN-WAC alliance? Not much at this time. The denial was not unexpected, and the NCAA's moratorium on single-sport conferences is set to expire on June 1 unless extended by the Board of Directors. If the moratorium is extended, conference officials believe they will receive a waiver similar to the one they've received the last two years to maintain its automatic qualifier status for the FCS playoffs.
  • Kilgore presents 2022 SWJCFC championship rings at spring game: Kilgore presented rings to the members of the Rangers 2022 SWJCFC championship team before their annual Blue/Gray spring game last Saturday. Kilgore finished last year with an 8-4 record and are set to return 15 lettermen from last season's roster. The Rangers are expected to shift into an up-tempo offense for the 2023 campaign.

  • HCU gains another high-profile commitment: Houston Christian continues to add to its impressive recruiting class with the addition of defensive lineman RJ Orebo. The Dayton, Texas native committed to Texas A&M out of high school and transferred to Southern Illinois last year. The Huskies have signed the top recruiting class in the Southland and a Top-10 class in FCS, according to some recruiting services.
  • ACU releases 2023 schedule: Abilene Christian are set to play a challenging schedule in 2023 with expectations of competing for the UAC title. The Wildcats host national semifinalist and two-time Southland champion UIW in Week 3 before beginning conference play at Central Arkansas. ACU has two games scheduled against FBS foes with a visit to North Texas in Week 5 and a trip to College Station to meet Texas A&M in the final week of the regular season.

  • Former TLU athlete dies at age 24: Our condolences to the family of Zachary Herman and the Texas Lutheran community after the 27-year-old died following a months-long battle with A.L.L. Leukemia. The Lake Travis product was recruited to play football for TLU before transitioning to become a full-time track and field athlete. Herman set a new record at TLU in the hammer throw and earned All-Region honors in his junior and senior seasons. Herman was diagnosed with Leukemia on July 20, 2022, and was TLU's recipient of the SCAC "Change for the Better" campaign, which raised nearly $3,500 to support Herman during his battle.

  • UTPB owns best transfer class in DII: New UTPB  head coach Kris McCullough is focused on winning early. That became more apparent when the Falcons were ranked as having the best transfer class in NCAA Division II, according to AthLinkd. UTPB loaded up with 12 1-star transfers to sit atop the rankings and was the only LSC team in the Top 25. Black Hills State from the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference was ranked sixth and pulled in a 3-star transfer.

  • The Lone Star Conference was dealt a blow to its 2023 football schedule when Simon Fraser announced it was immediately discontinuing football. The move comes after the LSC had told the Red Leafs that they would not be an affiliate member for football after this season. Each team will now decide whether to fill the hole in their schedule or use it as a bye week. Hardin-Simmons coach Jesse Burleson is still looking to complete his schedule and has expressed the Cowboys have possible open dates for Sept. 16, Sept. 23, and Oct. 14.

  • Tarleton adds long-time Tulane coach: Tarleton added Jake Stone to the coaching staff to serve as outside linebackers coach. Stone arrives in Stephenville after spending 11 years as a coach at Tulane. The Green Wave alum spent the last three years as a defensive analyst after serving four years as a graduate assistant, including three years with the defense and one season with recruiting. Stone was a student assistant during his undergraduate career.

  • UTRGV names offensive line coach: UTRGV coach Travis Bush continues establishing his coaching staff and has named Jeff Bowen as offensive line coach. Bowen spent the last four years as offensive coordinator and offensive line coach at Northeastern State. Bowen and Bush were both members of the UTSA staff during the Roadrunners inaugural season in 2011. The connection between Bush and Bowen began when Bush was a member of the Texas State coaching staff while Bowen was an offensive lineman for the Bobcats. Bowen has ties to multiple Texas schools, with stops at Stephen F. Austin along with Texas State and UTSA.
  • Long-time American Southwest Conference commissioner to step away: ASC commissioner Amy Carlton announced she will step away by June 30. Carlton served the last 16 years as commissioner of the ASC following a stint as assistant commissioner and director of media relations in the conference office. questions surround the future of football in the ASC with the departure of Southwestern to the Southern Athletic Association this year, Sul Ross State to NCAA Division II and the Lone Star Conference, and McMurry, Texas Lutheran, and Austin College heading to the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference in 2024.
  • SFA loses another assistant coach to an FBS school: Dave Campbell’s Texas Football has confirmed that Stephen F. Austin running backs coach Eric Stephens is leaving the Lumberjacks to assume the same position at Texas State, as first reported by FootballScoop.com. Stephens recently finished his first season with SFA after coaching stints at Sam Houston High School, Arlington Martin High School, and Ellison High School. Before beginning his coaching career, Stephens was a running back at Texas Tech from 2010-2012.

  • WBU names defensive staff: Wayland Baptist head coach Marcos Hinojosa released his defensive coaching staff. Thomas Walser will serve as co-defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach. Walser spent the last two years as head coach at Holdenville High School in Oklahoma. Marcos Hinojos Jr. was elevated to co-defensive coordinator and linebackers coach. Denzel Bradford was retained and will coach the defensive line and serve as video coordinator.
  • Bearkats add former NFL coach to staff: Sam Houston announced the addition of Brian Natkin to the coaching staff. Natkin will serve as offensive line coach after spending the last four years as assistant offensive line coach for the Arizona Cardinals. Natkin previously served as tight ends coach at his alma mater, UTEP, from 2012-2017 and was an assistant coach at Midwestern State from 2007-2011.
  • Lamar adds director of football operations from DII: Lamar named Jacob Diaz as director of football operations. Diaz spent the last two seasons as wide receivers coach and special teams coordinator at Division II Adams State. Diaz began his coaching career at Southwest High School in California before serving as a graduate assistant at Briar Cliff for three years.

  • HCU adds former SMU coach: Houston Christian announced the addition of Herschel Sims to its coaching staff. Sims will coach the inside receivers for the Huskies after spending the last two seasons as a senior quality control analyst with SMU. An alum of Abilene Christian, Sims has also spent time at UIW and was a grad assistant at North Texas. Before joining the Cardinals, Sims was tight ends coach and co-special teams coordinator at Richardson High School.

  • Texas A&M-Commerce adds to coaching staff: The Lions announced the addition of two coaches to Clint Dolezel’s staff. Nick Louvier will coach the running backs after spending last year in the same role at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College. Jarrett Boykin Jr. will coach the wide receivers at A&M-Commerce. A former Virginia Tech standout with NFL playing experience, Boykin was receivers coach last year at Murray State.
  • MSU will add former Texas A&M-Commerce OC to same position: MSU will name former Texas A&M-Commerce offensive coordinator Billy Riebock to the same position. Riebock spent the last four seasons with the Lions under former head coach David Bailiff. The Mustangs will also add former Eastern Illinois tight ends coach Gunnard Twyner as wide receivers coach. In addition, former MSU defensive backs coach, Adrian McDonald, is headed to the Rio Grande Valley to join the UTRGV coaching staff.

  • SFA names defensive coordinator: Stephen F. Austin head coach Colby Carthel moved quickly to fill the Lumberjacks defensive coordinator position with spring practice on the horizon. The 'Jacks are set to name Tulane linebackers coach Michael Mutz as defensive coordinator in the near future. Mutz was twice a member of Sam Houston's coaching staff and served as defensive coordinator at Blinn in 2012. Most recently, Mutz has been on the same coaching staff with Tulane head coach Willie Fritz for the last 10 seasons, including eight at Tulane.

  • Austin College finalizes coaching staff: Austin College head coach Tony Joe White completed his coaching staff the school announced in a release. Bradley Oh will serve as offensive coordinator, while George Love is the defensive coordinator. The remaining staff consists of Xavier Maxwell (wide receivers), Bobby Briones (defensive line), and Bennet New (linebackers). White is in his first season at the helm of the 'Roos after a successful run at Birmingham-Southern.
  • McMurry announces staff changes: McMurry announced changes to the War Hawks coaching staff. Defensive coordinator Will Snyder was promoted to associate head coach and will continue to serve the duties of defensive coordinator. New additions to the staff include tight ends coach Reed Collins, who spent last year at Howard Payne, and McMurry alum Matt Newby will begin his second stint on the War Hawks staff as offensive line coach, a position he held with the War Hawks in 2015.

  • Lamar moves quickly to fill OC position: Lamar head coach Peter Rossomando is moving quickly to fill the Cardinals offensive coordinator position. DCTF sources indicate that Rossomando is expected to hire Valparaiso offensive coordinator Will Fleming to guide Lamar's offense. In his only season with the Beacons, Fleming helped lead Valpo to three road wins in the Pioneer League. It marked the first time the Beacons won three road games in a single season in the Pioneer League since 1962. Before arriving at Valpo, Fleming spent two years as quarterbacks coach at Boston College and was the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Rhode Island from 2014-2019.
  • Tyler JC names defensive coordinator: Tyler announced the addition of Elven Walker IV to serve as the defensive coordinator for the Apaches. Walker spent the last two years as secondary and special teams coach at FCS Saint Francis. Before his time with the Red Flash, Walker spent two seasons as linebacker coach and special teams coordinator for Coe College and defensive backs coach and punt return coordinator at Carroll.

  • Rice adds high school coaching legend: Galena Park North Shore head coach John Kay is moving to the college level as the linebackers coach at Rice. Kay was 117-18 in nine seasons at the helm for the Mustangs. They won four state titles during that span. North Shore was 15-1 and runner-up in Class 6A Division I in 2022. 
  • Lamar football stadium to get new videoboard: Matt Faye of the Beaumont Enterprise reported that Lamar's Provost Umphrey Stadium will receive a new videoboard and sound system. The upgrades are expected to be completed before the start of the 2023 season. Faye reports the new videoboard was funded through private donations and will feature a seven-foot interlocking LU logo on the front of a nearly 37-foot wide illuminated logo of Lamar on the back.
  • Lamar OC departs for FBS job: Lamar offensive coordinator John Perry has left the program for a job with an FBS program. The news was first reported by Matt Faye of the Beaumont Enterprise. Sources confirmed to DCTF that Perry departed the Cardinals to return to Rutgers, where he was an assistant coach before joining Sam Houston last year. Perry previously served on the Houston Texans coaching staff for seven seasons and is known for his outstanding work with quarterbacks.

  • Texas Southern finalizes coaching staff: Texas Southern head coach Clarence McKinney has finalized his coaching staff, which includes a new defensive coordinator. Everett Todd joins the Tigers from Aldine Eisenhower, where he served as defensive ends coach. Todd previously spent 9 years as the defensive coordinator at Grambling. TSU's defensive coordinator last season, Jeffery Ceasar, remains on staff as defensive line coach. Aman Anand will serve as special teams coordiantor and running backs coach following three years as an assistant at Baylor. Anand is a fast-rising coach with previous stops at Penn State, Memphis, Utah State, and Northern Arizona.
  • SFA adds defensive ends coach: Stephen F. Austin head coach Colby Carthel is adding West Texas A&M alum Brett Watson to the Lumberjacks staff. Watson will serve as defensive ends coach at SFA after serving as a defensive quality control coach at North Dakota State last year. Before joining the Bison, Watson spent four seasons as defensive line coach at UIW.

  • Former Sam Houston coach returns to Bearkats: Sam Houston announced the return of Chris Buckner to the Bearkats coaching staff. Buckner will serve as wide receivers coach for SHSU after spending last year coaching outside receivers at Texas State. Buckner previously served as running backs coach in Huntsville from 2020-2021 and helped lead the Bearkats to a national title with running back Ramon Jefferson earned All-American honors under his tutelage.
  • Confirmed, South Texas head coach heading to UIW: Dave Campbell's Texas Football has confirmed sources who indicated that Bruni High School coach Richard Johnson was resigning after four years and will accept a position with UIW. Johnson will serve as a defensive analyst for the Cardinals after compiling a 22-18 overall record and leading the Badgers to the area round of the playoffs in three consecutive seasons.
  • McMurry alum returns to Abilene: Dave Campbell's Texas Football has learned that Matthew Newby is returning to McMurry. A former member of the War Hawks from 2012-2016, Newby returns to Abilene to serve as offensive line coach. He spent the last five years as offensive coordinator and offensive line coach at Oakdale, La. High School.
  • Lamar launches CardiNIL Exchange: Lamar announced a partnership with INFLCR to begin the CardiNIL Exchange to allow student-athletes to pursue Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) opportunities. The Cardinals join a quickly growing list of NIL opportunities for athletes, with Sam Houston launching the Kat Fund earlier this year.   • West Texas A&M announced the completion of the Buffs coaching staff under Josh Lynn. As previously reported in the Blitz, Levi Gallas will serve as defensive coordinator and defensive line coach. Cody Russell will coach wide receivers and is co-special teams coordinator, Brian Vaughn will coach the linebackers, and Chris Watkins will remain on staff. WT previously announced Shayne Shade as running backs and tight ends coach and is the Buffs recruiting coordinator. Newly announced additions to the staff include offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Chase Kyser along with defensive backs coach and co-special teams coordinator Justin Richter.

  • Sam Houston OL coach leaves for Utah State: Dave Campbell's Texas Football has confirmed that Sam Houston offensive line coach, Cooper Bassett, has accepted the same position at Utah State. One of the fastest rising young coaches in the country, Bassett was instrumental in helping the Bearkats secure its 2023 recruiting class. The timing isn't ideal for the Bearkats, who are scheduled to begin spring practice on March 1. Sources indicate coach K.C. Keeler will move fast to find a new offensive line coach, and delaying the start of spring practice is also a possibility.
  • Sul Ross alum returns as OC: Sul Ross State coach Barry Derickson has named Christian Escobar as the Lobos offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach. A former player and alum of SRSU, Escobar spent the last five seasons as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at NAIA Oklahoma Panhandle State. The El Paso native served as tight end and running backs coach for the Lobos from 2015-2016 before returning to his hometown to serve as quarterback and running back coach at Fabens High School in 2017.

  • OC leaves Houston: The Houston offense will be under new leadership when the Cougars reach the Big 12 in the fall because offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson is taking the same gig at Miami. Dawson, who helped the Cougars to a 20-7 record over the past two seasons, engineered a high-powered offense led by quarterback Clayton Tune and wide receiver Nathaniel Dell. Houston averaged 36.1 points per game in 2022, which was 16th in the nation. The Cougars were 15thnationally in 2021 when they averaged 35.9 points per game during a 12-win campaign that culminated in a bowl win over Auburn and a trip to the AAC title game. 
  • Midwestern State begins search to fill coaching staff positions: Three full-time Midwestern State coaches have departed since the end of the 2022 season. Offensive coordinator Josh Miller has accepted a job as an offensive analyst at Purdue, offensive line coach Garrett Graf is now co-offensive coordinator and offensive line coach at Colorado State-Pueblo, and wide receivers coach Joshua Atkinson also joined the CSU-Pueblo staff as wide receivers coach and recruiting coordinator. Sources indicate head coach Bill Maskill chose to focus on the Mustangs recruiting class and began to research candidates to fill the staff openings within the last week.
  • This year’s coaching carousel was the busiest in the five years I have spent covering the sub-FBS ranks for Dave Campbell’s Texas Football. When the 2023 season begins, it will mark the beginning of a new era for 11 teams in Texas. Sub-FBS insider Cory Hogue takes a stab at grading each new hire based on how the new coach fits with their new program, the excitement of the fan base and athletes around the hire, assistant coaches hired thus far, the support each coach will receive from the administration, and the coach’s chance to succeed at their new school.

  • Name, Image, and Likeness deals have dominated college football headlines, but schools like Sam Houston need to find the sweet spot between using big-dollar donors for facility improvements while giving small-dollar donors a way to contribute to the athletes. The Kat Fund seeks to find the balance by using membership tiers to entice fans to give money that will be used for the athlete's appearances in person and on social media for various charities and local high schools.

  • Tarleton assistant coach dies tragically: Dave Campbell's Texas Football extends our condolences toward the family of Tarleton, the city of Stephenville, and all who feel loss after assistant coach Marc Martinez died in a motor vehicle accident Friday morning. Martinez arrived at Tarleton in 2011 after graduating from Waco Midway High School and never left Stephenville. He was a standout linebacker for the Texans during his playing career, where he was a two-time All-Lone Star Conference selection and led the team in tackles during his senior season. Martinez transitioned into a full-time position in 2017 and served as linebackers coach and summer camp coordinator prior to his death. Martinez was 30 years old and is survived by his wife, Laci, and two daughters, Estella and Camilla.   • Texas A&M-Commerce adds to coaching staff: Texas A&M-Commerce announced the addition of three new members to the Lions coaching staff. Dave Ewart was named offensive line coach, while Bobby Bounds will serve as director of player personnel, and John McWilliams will assume the role of director of football strength and conditioning. The addition of a strength and conditioning coach solely for football is a new position for the Lions. The lack of a strength coach to focus solely on football was reportedly a sticking point between the school and the previous coaching staff.
  • Lamar completes coaching staff: Peter Rossomando finalized his Lamar coaching staff with four additions. Todd Macon will serve as running backs coach after spending the 2022 season in the same role with Mary Hardin-Baylor. Daryl Daleen will serve as co-special teams coordinator and inside linebackers coach alongside fellow co-special teams coordinator and outside linebackers coach Dave Stedman. Andrew Sparano will serve as tight ends coach for the Cardinals after spending last year at Chowan University.

  • FCS coaches are finding a higher level of high school athletes available to them since the CoVID pandemic provided each athlete with an extra year of eligibility. A few FCS coaches spoke with DCTF about how they are taking advantage of FBS schools choosing a known commodity over a high school player.
  • SFA defensive coach departs for rival: Stephen F. Austin defensive tackle coach Ike Eguae announced on his Twitter account that he is leaving the Lumberjacks to serve as the defensive line coach at Sam Houston. Eguae joined the Lumberjacks last year after serving as an assistant coach at Division II Fort Says State for seven years. He also spent time at on the coaching staff at Coffeyville Community College and Pittsburg State.

  • Houston Christian sits atop the 247 Sports FCS rankings following National Signing Day, which is an incredible feat for a coaching staff that took over in mid-December. The key to the class was a vision and a blueprint laid out by coach Braxton Harris.

  • Austin College adds George Love to coaching staff: Austin College announced the addition of George Love as defensive coordinator and secondary coach. As previously reported, Bradley Oh will serve as the offensive coordinator, offensive line coach, and recruiting coordinator for the 'Roos.
  • Sul Ross hires defensive coordinator: Sul Ross State named Garland native Cadron Davis assistant head coach and defensive coordinator. Davis spent the last two years as defensive line coach, run game coordinator and special teams coordinator at Faulkner. Davis spent the 2016 season as a secondary coaching intern at Abilene Christian before working with Lobos head coach Barry Derickson at Independence Community College.
  • When Clint Killough and the UIW coaching staff looked at their roster following a trip to the FCS semifinals, they saw a need to reload the talent base of their program with Texas high school football talent.

  • Rice loses assistant coach: The Owls must replace cornerback coach Gerard Wilcher because he accepted a job as head coach at Morehouse College. He is a Morehouse alum who has also worked at Delaware State, Seton Hill, and Lehigh.
  • Wayland Baptist elevates Hinojos to head coach: Wayland Baptist promoted defensive coordinator Marcos Hinojos to head coach. He was serving as interim head coach since Butch Henderson resigned in November. Hinojos arrived at WBU in 2015 and began serving as linebackers coach before being elevated to defensive coordinator. Hinojos has an extensive history in Texas high school football and served as a defensive coordinator at multiple schools before spending four years as athletic director and head coach at Plainview High School.
  • LSC to not renew affiliation with Simon Fraser: The Lone Star Conference has informed Simon Fraser that the conference will not be renewing its affiliation with the SFU, the school announced on Thursday. The Red Leafs joined the LSC as an affiliate member for football last year following the dissolution of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference. The 2023 season will be SFU's last with the LSC, with Sul Ross State replacing the Red Leafs in the 2024 season after the Lobos officially applied for membership to NCAA Division II on Feb. 1. Simon Fraser could remain as an independent or join another NCAA Division II conference. The Red Leafs could also choose to only play against collegiate teams in Canada, which would result in SFU losing its players from the United States on its roster. SFU said an update on the future of its football program will be provided later this year.
  • The Texas A&M-Commerce offense is expected to improve in its first season under coach Clint Dolezel. The Lions used the 2023 recruiting cycle to focus on improving the offense beginning with the offensive line.

  • Tarleton names offensive coordinator: Dave Campbell's Texas Football has confirmed that Tarleton will name Mason Miller offensive coordinator. Miller will assume playcalling duties from head coach Todd Whitten. Miller spent the last three seasons on Mike Leach's staff at Mississippi State. This is a return to Tarleton for Miller, who served as associate head coach and offensive coordinator for the Texans from 2014-2016. He also spent five years on the staff at McMurry, including one season as the War Hawks head coach in 2013. Miller's first collegiate job was on Hal Mumme's staff at Southeastern Louisiana.
  • A look into Sam Houston's 2023 recruiting strategy: K.C. Keeler developed a recruiting strategy that led to a national title for Sam Houston in 2020 and saw no reason to change the successful approach heading into FBS and Conference USA.

  • UMHB adds offensive line coach from Arkansas-Pine Bluff: Mary Hardin-Baylor added to its coaching staff on Monday with the announcement of offensive line coach Alex Farah. Farah spent last season at FCS Arkansas-Pine Bluff. His coaching career began at Appalachian State, where he began coaching linebackers and defensive line as a student assistant before transitioning to a graduate assistant position coaching the offensive line. Farah also had stops at Texas State, Glenville State, Hutchinson CC, and Independence CC before joining UAPB.

  • Warner resigns at UTEP: UTEP offensive coordinator Dave Warner retired after two years in El Paso, sources confirm to DCTF. He arrived in El Paso prior to the 2021 season. Warner engineered a big-play attack that averaged 393 yards of total offense – the most since 2009. The Miners reached a bowl game with wide receiver Jacob Cowing setting records with 1,354 yards and eight 100-yard games in a single season. They won five games in 2022.

  • Shade joins West Texas A&M coaching staff: West Texas A&M announced the addition of Shayne Shade to the Buffs coaching staff. He will serve as running backs and tight ends coach. Shade spent the last eight years as a member of the Nebraska-Kearney coaching staff. He began coaching defensive lineman and linebackers at UNK before moving to the offensive side of the football. Shade served as the Lopers recruiting coordinator, running backs, tight ends, and inside wide receivers coach last season.
  • UTRGV reaches benchmark in season ticket sales: The Rio Grande Valley is excited about college football heading to the region in 2025.   • UTRGV names Director of Football Operations and Administration: UTRGV announced the addition of John Simmons to the football staff. Simmons will serve as the Director of Football Operations and Administration. He will work closely with Vaqueros head coach Travis Bush and Vice President and Director of Athletics Chasse Conque. Simmons spent last season as athletics director and head football coach at Canyon Middle School in New Braunfels.

  • Texas A&M-Kingsville names defensive coordinator: Texas A&M-Kingsville hired Jamison Bisch to be the Javelinas defensive coordinator. Bisch spent last season as defensive coordinator at fellow LSC member Eastern New Mexico. Before joining the Greyhounds, he was defensive coordinator at Bemidji and helped lead the Beavers to the second round of the 2021 NCAA Division II playoffs.

  • University of Houston announces LSU in 2027: Tuesday afternoon, Houston and LSU announced that both schools will kickoff the season in 2027 with a neutral site game in NRG Stadium on Labor Day weekend. It'll be the first game between the two programs since 2000 and the fourth overall meeting.
  • Chris Jackson hired at Texas: Sources confirm to DCTF that Jacksonville Jaguars assistant Chris Jackson is accepting a job with the Longhorns as wide receiver coach. Texas needed to replace Brennan Marion after one year in Austin after he was hired as the offensive coordinator at UNLV. Jackson spent one year in Jacksonville where his wide receiver group caught 238 passes for 2,677 yards and 19 touchdowns.

  • University of Texas names director of high school relations: Former Austin LBJ head coach Jamal Fenner has been named Texas' newest director of high school relations. An Austin-native, Fenner had been the head coach of the Jaguars since 2018 before resigning his post for the Longhorns' position. His hiring replaces Chris Gilbert who left to become North Texas' tight ends coach and associate head coach.

  • Houston Christian names defensive coordinator: Houston Christian head coach Braxton Harris announced the hiring of Eric Daniels, who will serve as the Huskies' defensive coordinator and linebackers coach. Daniels spent the past three years as defensive coordinator at Towson and was defensive coordinator at Briar Cliff and Oklahoma Panhandle State before joining the Tigers.
  • Howard Payne adds receivers coach: Howard Payne head coach Kevin Bachtel began assembling the final pieces of his coaching staff with the announcement of Terell Sims as receivers coach. Sims served as receivers coach and passing game coordinator at Sul Ross State last season. Before joining the Lobos last season, Sims was the wide receivers coach at NCAA Division II Valdosta State. Some of his previous coaching stops include Eastern Illinois, Virginia State, Florida A&M, and Florida International.

  • Sul Ross to join the LSC: Sources have confirmed to Dave Campbell’s Texas Football that Sul Ross State is expected to transition to NCAA Division II and join the Lone Star Conference on July 1, 2024. The Lobos have been charter members of the American Southwest Conference since 1996. The decision marks a return to the LSC for the Lobos, who was a member of the conference from 1950-1976 when the LSC competed in NAIA.
  • WT releases 2023 schedule: West Texas A&M released its 2023 football schedule on Thursday. Head coach Josh Lynn will begin his first campaign at the helm at Western Colorado on Sept. 2. The Buffs have six home games scheduled, including LSC rivals Midwestern State and Angelo State.
  • SMU solidified its defensive coaching staff by hiring Maurice Crum, a source confirmed to DCTF. Crum, who spent 2022 at Ole Miss, arrived in Oxford after five seasons at Western Kentucky. He was the defensive coordinator at WKU in 2021, holding opponents to 21 points or less in seven of their last eight games that season. He was at Indiana State in 2016 and was a defensive graduate assistant at Notre Dame in 2015. Crum was a four-year letterwinner at Notre Dame from 2005-08. He played in 52 games, starting 42 straight times. He recorded over 300 tackles and eight sacks in his career. He was a team captain in 2007 and 2008.

  • Sul Ross promotes Fregia: Sul Ross State announced the promotion of Caden Fregia to full-time linebacker coach. Fregia began his coaching career as a student assistant working with the linebackers following his playing career in 2021.
  • Kendal Briles hired at TCU as offensive coordinator: Sonny Dykes is set to hire Arkansas offensive coordinator Kendal Briles, sources confirm to DCTF. The opening was created when Garrett Riley left for the same role at Clemson. The Arkansas offense ranked 35th in scoring at the FBS level in 2022.

  • AJ Steward named running back coach at Baylor: Current Oregon State assistant AJ Steward is set to be named new running back coach and assistant head coach, sources confirm to DCTF. The vacancy was recreated when Justin Johnson left for the wide receiver job at Texas Tech. The Bears went 6-6 in 2022 following a Big 12 championship season in 2021. Steward arrives in Baylor after two years spent at Oregon State. Beavers running back B.J. Baylor led the Pac-12 in rushing in 2021, totaling 1,337 yards. The unit averaged a program-record 5.3 yards a rush that season. Steward was the running back coach at Arizona in 2020 and at BYU in 2018 and 2019. He played tight end at Kansas and has experience in Texas from time as an assistant at Rice. 
  • WT coaching staff rounding into shape: DCTF has confirmed four members of Josh Lynn’s staff at West Texas A&M. Levi Gallas is the defensive coordinator and defensive line coach, Brian Vaughn is the linebacker coach, Chris Watkins remains on the Buffs staff and is the defensive backs coach, and Cody Russell will coach wide receivers and is special team co-coordinator.
  • Alum returns to be OC for 'Roos: Austin College head coach Tony Joe White has added Bradley Oh to his coaching staff as offensive coordinator and offensive line coach. An alum of Austin College, Oh returns to Sherman after spending the last two seasons as offensive coordinator and offensive line coach at Highland Community College.

  • UTPB finalizes coaching staff: Dave Campbell’s Texas Football has confirmed that new UTPB head coach Kris McCullough has finalized his coaching staff. The Falcons staff consists of Rob Messinger (assistant head coach and special teams coordinator), Ryan Lusby (offensive coordinator and running backs), Dionte Dean (defensive coordinator and defensive backs), Jacob Maxwell (run game coordinator and offensive line), Blake Crandall (wide receivers), Alex Wierzbicki (recruiting coordinator and defensive line), Brady Carson (linebackers), Ngalu Fusimalohi (assistant defensive line), and Justin Victorian (safeties).
  • Sul Ross names offensive line coach: Sul Ross announced the addition of Eric Daniels to the Lobos coaching staff. Daniels will serve as offensive line coach after spending the last four seasons as a member of Tarleton's coaching staff. He began as an intern with the Texans before transitioning to a graduate assistant coach.

  • Justin Johnson to join Texas Tech staff: Texas Tech is set to hire Baylor assistant Justin Johnson as the next wide receiver coach and assistant head coach, a source confirms to DCTF. Johnson was an assistant alongside Texas Tech head coach Joey McGuire for a couple of seasons in Waco. Johnson coached the Bears running backs since 2020, one of the strengths of the offense. He also had stints at Texas A&M and Houston. Johnson replaces Emmett Jones, who took the wide receiver coach and passing game coordinator gig at Oklahoma.
  • Howard Payne adds Chance Rieken to coaching staff: Rieken will coach the offensive line for the Yellow Jackets after spending last season as an offensive quality control coach for Abilene Christian. Before joining ACU, Rieken spent two seasons at Mary Hardin-Baylor as a graduate assistant working mainly with the offensive line. Rieken began his coaching career at Angelo State and spent one season as the offensive line coach at Northwestern Oklahoma State.
  • UIW announces the addition of 12 transfers: Among the transfers, five are from power five schools, four come from group of five schools, one from the FCS ranks, and two from Lone Star Conference institutions. The transfers are Zack Calzada (Texas A&M/Auburn), Derrick Lewis (Texas Tech), Darren Brown (SMU), Dalton Meyer (Sam Houston), Branon Jackson (Texas A&M-Kingsville), Mason Chambers (Iowa State), Joe Bryson (USC), Chase Carter (Michigan State), Ronald Wilson (New Mexico), Ryan Stubblefield (East Carolina), Marcus Brown (Howard) and Chris Pierce (Eastern New Mexico).
  • Lamar adds four to coaching staff, including both coordinators: Peter Rossomando has been busy putting his staff together at Lamar. Last Wednesday, Rossomando announced the addition of four coaches, including both coordinators. John Perry will be the offensive coordinator for the Cardinals after one season at Rutgers. Drew Christ is the defensive coordinator and arrives in Beaumont after three years at Boston College. Matt Cannata is the offensive line coach following one year at Mary Hardin-Baylor in the same position and Pat Walker (Minnesota) is the top strength and conditioning assistant for football.

  • Killiough reportedly finalizes full-time staff at UIW: According to sources, UIW head coach Clint Killough is expected to hire Saskatchewan d-line coach Ben Olson to same position with Cardinals, North Texas defensive senior analyst Sam Bennett as linebackers coach, Pittsburg State cornerbacks coach George Sanders as defensive backs coach, and promote Blair Cavanaugh to Special Teams coordinator.
  • Lorenzo Jackson joins Lamar coaching staff: Lamar coach Peter Rossomando added the third member of his coaching staff by naming Lorenzo Jackson as the Cardinals' defensive line coach. Jackson spent last season coaching the defensive line at Mississippi College. Before arriving in Mississippi, he spent two years as a graduate assistant at Ohio State, where he assisted with the defensive line. Jackson is no stranger to the state of Texas and has spent time as a graduate assistant at North Texas after starting his coaching career at Grambling.
  • Ruzicka names coordinators at ETBU: East Texas Baptist coach Calvin Ruzicka took the first step towards establishing his coaching staff with the promotion of Jordan Collins to defensive coordinator and Jordan Armstrong to offensive coordinator. The Tigers also announced that Mason Ruzicka will be promoted to special teams coach and recruiting coordinator. Collins previously served as the defensive line coach at ETBU, while Armstrong was the Tigers' wide receiver coach last year. Mason Ruzicka will be entering his fifth year at ETBU and was the linebacker coach last season.

  • Bobby Petrino hired as Texas A&M offensive coordinator: The Aggies announced the hiring of the former Arkansas and Louisville head coach as the team’s next playmaker. He was most recently the lead man for FCS program Missouri City. As the head coach of Louisville, he helped Lamar Jackson win the Heisman Trophy. Petrino also coached the Atlanta Falcons in 2007. 

  • Jordan Whittington returning to Texas: The former four-star recruit out of Cuero announced he'll return for a fifth year at Texas. The slot receiver is a leader for the Longhorns and one of their most important offensive weapons. He caught 45 passes for 608 yards and a touchdown last season.

  • Salinas signs extension at Kingsville: Texas A&M-Kingsville announced Thursday they reached an agreement on a contract extension with head coach Mike Salinas. The contract was extended through the 2026 season. He has led an incredible turnaround at Kingsville since his arrival prior to the pandemic. Salinas led the Javelinas to their best season since 2016 and an appearance in the Fun Town RV Heritage Bowl last year.
  • Two MSU assistants headed to CSU-Pueblo: Midwestern State is losing two assistant coaches to Colorado State-Pueblo. Offensive line coach Garrett Graf will serve as co-offensive coordinator and offensive line coach for Thunderwolves' new head coach Philip Vigil. MSU wide receivers coach Joshua Atkinson will assume the same position at CSU-Pueblo. Vigil has focused on coaches from Texas while building his staff in Pueblo. Former SFA defensive line coach Caid Faske was named defensive coordinator on Wednesday.
  • Oliver Luck to direct ASUN-WAC partnership: Oliver Luck is back in college football and will become the executive director of the ASUN-WAC partnership. The two conferences have joined forces for football to ensure an automatic bid to the FCS playoffs following the defections of Sam Houston of the WAC and Jacksonville State of the ASUN to Conference USA. The WAC also lost Lamar and UIW last July. Tarleton president James Hurley and Eastern Kentucky president David McFaddin will serve as co-chairs of the league. Luck has previously served as an NCAA executive and was athletic director at West Virginia before serving as commissioner of the XFL until the league disbanded due to the pandemic. ESPN was first to report.

  • SFA defensive line coach Caid Faske departs for DC position: Faske will assume the role of defensive coordinator at NCAA Division II Colorado State-Pueblo. He joins former Western New Mexico head coach Philip Vigil, who became the head coach at CSU-Pueblo last week. Faske and Vigil are both members of the Colby Carthel coaching tree, working together at SFA. Following his playing career at West Texas A&M, Faske joined the Buffs staff under then-head coach Don Carthel in 2012. Overall, Faske has spent nine of his 11 seasons as a college football coach with Colby Carthel.
  • North Texas rounds out staff: Eric Morris finished out his first staff at North Texas with Jon Cooper (offensive line), Demerick Gray (defensive line), and Clay Jennings (safeties) announced by the program. Josh Kirkland was announced as director of player personnel.

  • Matt Powledge named Baylor’s defensive coordinator: Head coach Dave Aranda chose a familiar face as his next defensive coordinator by tagging Powledge, formerly the co-defensive coordinator at Oregon, as the next person to lead the defense. Powledge spent 2020 and 2021 as the safeties and special teams coordinator for the Bears. 

  • Mean Green add to staff: New head coach Eric Morris announced five more members of his initial coaching staff with Matt Caponi (Defensive Coordinator/Corners), Jordan Davis (Offensive Coordiantor/Wide Receivers), Bryan Kegans (Head Strength and Conditioning Coach), Colby Kratch (Linebackers), and Justin Owens (Director of Recruiting).

  • Joey McGuire signs extension: Texas Tech rewarded its first-year head coach after an eight-win season with a six-year, $26.6 million contract that runs through the 2028 season. The Red Raiders beat Texas and Oklahoma at home in the same season for the first time in program history. They finished above .500 in Big 12 play for the first time since 2009. 

  • North Texas adds to staff: New head coach Eric Morris announced the initial hirings to his staff with Sean Brophy (Quarterbacks), Patrick Cobbs (Running backs), Chris Gilbert (tight ends), Rolando Surita (Chief of Staff), and Drew Svoboda (Special Teams Coordinator).  Gilbert and Svoboda are former Texas high school football head coaches.

  • JT Daniels transferring to Rice: The former five-star quarterback is transferring to Rice in what will be his fourth school in four years. Daniels began his career at USC before moving to Georgia and then to West Virginia. Rice has struggled with consistency and health at quarterback in the Mike Bloomgren era. 
  • Chris Gilbert to North Texas: The former high school coach spent the last few seasons working behind the scenes at Texas. He'll return to the field as a position coach at North Texas working with tight ends. Gilbert's addition should help the Mean Green recruit in DFW.

  • Bijan Robinson to turn pro: Texas is known for fielding great running backs and Robinson put his name into that group with a stellar three-year career as a Longhorn. He announced on Monday that he was turning pro and would forego the Alamo Bowl. Robinson, a former five-star recruit, won the Doak Walker Award as college football's best running back.

  • Max Duggan to turn pro: Max Duggan's college career isn't officially over, but it will be following the Horned Frogs run in the College Football Playoff. The TCU quarterback announced on Twitter that he'll turn pro once the postseason is over. Duggan was a multiple-year starter for TCU who started the 2022 season as a backup. He entered the Colorado game after an injury to Chandler Morris and led the Horned Frogs to a 12-0 regular season record. He finished second in the Heisman Trophy voting.

  • Clint Killough to take over at UIW: Incarnate Word is staying in house for its next head coach by elevating associate head coach Killough to the head spot. He's a San Antonio native that graduated from UIW in 2015. He began his college coaching career at Bowling Green.

  • Keeler, Sam Houston set to sign extension: Sources tell DCTF that Sam Houston and head football coach K.C. Keeler are set to agree on an extension that will keep the two-time FCS national champion in Huntsville for the foreseeable future. Keeler is 259-98-1 in his head coaching career and is the only person in FCS history to win a national championship with two different teams. He did it first at his alma mater, Delaware, back in 2003 and with Sam Houston in the spring of 2021. 
  • Eric Morris hired as North Texas head coach: Former UIW head man and current Washington State offensive coordinator Eric Morris was hired as the Mean Green's next football coach. He turned Incarnate Word into an FCS contender and routinely fields one of the best offenses in football.

  • Braxton Harris hired at Houston Christian: Houston Christian will name Braxton Harris its second head coach in program history. He will be introduced at a press conference on campus at noon Tuesday. Harris spent the last two seasons as associate head coach, linebackers coach, and recruiting coordinator for Mike Minter at Campbell. Harris led the Camels to one of the top FCS recruiting classes during the last two years. Prior to joining Campbell, Harris turned around the Howard Payne football program. He took over a program that went just 1-19 in the two previous seasons before his arrival. After back-to-back one-win campaigns, Harris led the Yellow Jackets to a 5-5 record, their best campaign since 2006.

  • Bush first ever coach at UT-RGV: Travis Bush will be named the coach for the UTRGV football program. Bush has spent the last two seasons as head coach at New Braunfels Canyon High School. Bush has an extensive coaching history in Texas college football. He began his coaching career at San Marcos High School following his career as a wide receiver at Texas State. After spending three seasons as a graduate assistant at TCU, Bush returned to his alma mater to coach wide receivers. He was named co-offensive coordinator for the Bobcats in 2007. He served three years in that position before becoming the offensive coordinator at UTSA.

  • Lamar names new head football coach: Lamar Director of Athletics Jeff O’Malley named Peter Rossomando its next head coach on Saturday. Rossomando spent the last two years as offensive line coach at Charlotte. He was named the 49ers interim head coach for the final four games this year. Rossomando brings head coaching experience to Beaumont. He led Central Connecticut State to its first appearance in the FCS playoffs in program history in 2017 and was named a finalist for the Eddie Robinson Award given to the top coach in FCS.

  • Max Duggan finishes second in Heisman Trophy voting: The TCU quarterback finished second to USC quarterback Caleb Williams in the 2022 Heisman Trophy voting. He helped the Horned Frogs finish the regular season at 12-1 and earn a three-seed in the College Football Playoff. They play Michigan on Dec. 31 in the Fiesta Bowl. The winner reaches the national championship game.

  • Bijan Robinson wins Doak Walker Award: The Texas running back won the Doak Walker Award, which is presented to college football's best running back. He is the fourth Longhorn to win the award, joining Ricky Williams, Cedric Benson, and D'Onta Foreman. Robinson rushed for 1,580 yards and recorded 314 as a receiver. His 20 total touchdowns was good for second in the nation. He averaged a Big 12 best 131.7 rushing yards for game and 157.83 all-purpose yards per game. 
  • Max Duggan wins Davey O'Brien Award: The hardware continues to pile up for the TCU quarterback. He led the Horned Frogs to their first College Football Playoff bid after a 12-1 season. Duggan threw for 3,321 yards and 30 touchdowns to just four interceptions. He also won the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award on Wednesday. He's also a finalist for the Heisman Trophy Award.

  • Garrett Riley wins Broyles Award: The Frank Broyles Award honors the best assistant coach in college football. That man in the 2022 season was Riley, the offensive coordinator at TCU. He helped the Horned Frogs to a 12-1 record and a three-seed into the College Football Playoff in his first year in Fort Worth. They averaged over 40 points a game and quarterback Max Duggan is a Heisman Finalist despite starting the year on the bench.

  • UTSA loses co-offensive coordinator: The Roadrunners will be on their third play-caller in as many years in 2023 with news that Will Stein is off to Oregon. Head coach Jeff Traylor wasted no time promoting from within, as is his custom. Tight ends coach and special teams is being promoted to co-offensive coordinator alongside offensive line coach Matt Mattox. 
  • Tank Dell declares for NFL Draft: The Houston Cougars are down a playmaker as they make the off-season transition to the Big 12 with Dell declaring for the draft. The first-team All-AAC selection caught a team-high 103 passes for 1,354 yards and 15 touchdowns during his junior campaign in 2022. He caught 90 passes for 1,329 yards and 12 scores as a sophomore in 2021. Dana Holgorsen says the only slot receivers he's coached that's as good as Dell is Tavon Austin, who had a succesful NFL run. 
  • Max Duggan receives Heisman Trophy invite: The Fiesta Bowl isn't the only trip the TCU quarterback is taking between now and the New Year. Duggan, who started the year as a backup, is one of four Heisman Trophy Finalists. He is headed to New York City alongside Stetson Bennett, C.J. Stroud, and Caleb Williams. Texas running back Bijan Robinson did not receive an invite. 
  • Former SFA linebacker Brevin Randle commits to La. Tech: Randle appeared in four games for the Lumberjacks this season and will reunite with La. Tech defensive coordinator Scott Power, who initially recruited Randle to Nacogdoches. The Marshall native led the team in tackles during the 2020 season and had the second most tackles to help lead SFA to the FCS playoffs in 2021.
  • UIW quarterback invited to Walter Payton Award ceremony: UIW quarterback Lindsey Scott Jr. was invited to the Walter Payton Award announcement on Jan. 7 in Frisco. Scott is one of three finalists and accounted for 62 total touchdowns (55 passing and 7 rushing) and 4,185 yards. He has completed 72.4 percent of his passes and only thrown six interceptions this season.

  • TCU makes College Football Playoff: TCU made history on Sunday morning when the Horned Frogs became the first Texas program to earn a berth into the College Football Playoffs. TCU (12-1) didn’t lose in Sonny Dykes’ first season in charge until the Big 12 Championship game against Kansas State, and it took the Wildcats overtime to dispatch of the Horned Frogs. TCU is the three-seed in the four-team format. The Horned Frogs will play Michigan on Dec. 31 in Arizona at the Fiesta Bowl. Georgia will play Ohio State in the other semifinal.  
  • Bowl games announced: Nine of the 12 FBS teams in Texas reached a bowl game upon the conclusion of the 2022 college football season:

  • Haynes King enters transfer portal: Sophomore quarterback Haynes King is set to enter the transfer portal after a frustrating career at Texas A&M. The former Longview Lobo was a four-star recruit who took a redshirt in 2020. He started the first two games of the 2021 season before a season-ending leg injury against Colorado put him on the shelf. King played in six games during the 2022 season. 
  • Denver Harris enters the transfer portal: The former five-star recruit announced his intentions to enter the transfer portal after an up-and-down freshman campaign at Texas A&M. He was one of the best true freshman in Texas when he was one the field, but Harris dealt with off-field issues that led to multiple games missed due to suspension.

  • Texas State hires G.J. Kinne: Kinne, who is the head coach at Incarnate Word, is a Texas native that played his senior year at Gilmer High School for current UTSA head coach Jeff Traylor. He is 10-1 as a college head coach at UIW in his first year leading the Cardinals, who play Furman on Saturday in the second-round of the FCS playoffs. Kinne signed a five-year contract on his 34th birthday.

  • Former Blinn College quarterback named to NJCAA Hall of Fame: Former Blinn quarterback Michael Bishop was named to the NJCAA Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame. Bishop went 24-0 as starting quarterback for the Buccaneers during the 1995 and 1996 seasons and led Blinn to become the first two-year college to win back-to-back national titles. Following his time at Blinn, Bishop set 14 Big 12 Conference records at Kansas State before being drafted by the New England Patriots in the seventh round of the 1999 NFL Draft.
  • Kyron Drones to enter portal: Add the talented backup quarterback at Baylor to a growing list of in-state players planning on entering the portal. Drones served as the primary backup to Blake Shapen throughout his redshirt freshman season. Drones, a state champion at Shadow Creek in the Houston area, still has three years of eligibility left in his college career. 
  • Max Duggan wins Jonny Unitas Golden Arm Award: The TCU quarterback continued to claim hardware for his performance during the regular season. The Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year also won the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award, which is presented to the best quarterback in college football who best exemplifies character, scholastic, and athletic achievement.

  • Max Duggan named Dave O'Brien Award Finalist: TCU's quarterback joins Ohio State's C.J. Stroud and and USC's Caleb Williams as the three finalist for the award given to the nation's top quarterback. Duggan has led the Horned Frogs to a 12-0 record and to the doorstep of a Big 12 crown and a ticket to the College Football Playoff. He leads the Big 12 in passing efficiency (171.3), touchdown passes (29), completion percentage (66.6), and passing yards (3,070). 
  • Bijan Robinson named Doak Walker Award Finalist: Texas' star running back joins Illinois' Chase Brown and Michigan's Blake Corum as finalists for the award given to the nation's top running back. Robinson leads the nation with 1,894 total yards, including 1,580 rushing yards. He's scored 20 total touchdowns and averages 157.83 total yards per game. 
  • Tre'Vius Hodges-Tomlinson named finalist for Jim Thorpe Award: The TCU defensive back joins Utah's Clark Phillips and Illinois' Devon Witherspoon as finalists for the award given to the nation's best secondary player. Hodges-Tomlinson is a two-time All-Big 12 first-team selection. He's recorded 40 tackles, including two for loss, with three interceptions, 10 pass breakups, and a forced fumble. 
  • SFA Board of Regents votes to join the University of Texas System: The Stephen F. Austin Board of Regents voted to join the University of Texas System on Tuesday. The Texas Legislature will hold a vote during its next legislative session on whether to approve the move. SFA was a hot commodity attracting offers from all four systems. The Lumberjacks are expected to keep their autonomy, name, mascot, and school colors. The SFA Board of Regents stated the UT System was the primary option due to access to the Permanent University Fund, which consists of assets created by oil and gas revenue. The revenue is generated from 2.1 million acres of land in West Texas, which reportedly brings in a billion dollars annually.
  • Wayland Baptist coach Butch Henderson steps down: Wayland Baptist head coach Butch Henderson submitted his resignation after leading the Pioneers since restarting the program in 2012. Henderson led the Pioneers to a winning record and a No. 22 ranking in 2016 and a transition to the Sooner Athletic Conference in 2018. Henderson finishes with a 32-75 overall record and a 20-49 record in conference play. Defensive coordinator Marcos Hinojos will serve as interim head coach while WBU searches for a new coach.

  • Darrell Dickey out at Texas A&M: Change is necessary following a five-win season that started with a sixth-place ranking in the AP Poll. The first domino to fall is offensive coordinator and tight end coach Darrell Dickey. He joined Jimbo Fisher's staff in 2018. Speculation is that Fisher will hire an offensive coordinator this cycle to take over play calling duties for an Aggies unit that struggled for most of 2022. TexAgs was first to report. 
  • Carrigan out at UTPB: Dave Campbell’s Texas Football has confirmed that Justin Carrigan will step down as head football coach at UT Permian Basin following seven years with the Falcons. Carrigan was hired as the program’s first head coach in early 2015 and departs with a 26-45 overall record, including a 5-6 record in 2022. The Falcons were close to finishing towards the top of the Lone Star Conference this season, but last-minute losses to West Texas A&M (28-27), Texas A&M-Kingsville (13-10), and Midwestern State (24-23) derailed what would've been another historic season for the Falcons.

  • Ashtyn Hawkins enters transfer portal: A cascade of players are sure to leave the Texas State program following the firing of head coach Jake Spavital. The first big piece to announce his intentions to transfer was Hawkins, the team's leading receiver in 2022. The sophomore from DeSoto caught 56 passes for 587 yards and seven touchdowns this season. 
  • Layne Hatcher enters transfer portal: Hawkins wasn't the only Texas State starter to hit the transfer portal on Monday afternoon. Starting quarterback Layne Hatcher also entered his name after taking every snap for the Bobcats in 2022. The former Alabama and Arkansas State signal caller passed for 2,653 yards and 19 touchdowns while completing 62 percent of his passes.

  • Texas State fires Jake Spavital: Texas State is parting ways with head football coach Jake Spavital following the Week 13 loss at home to Louisiana, as first reported by Football Scoop's Zach Barnett. The Bobcats finished the season at 4-8 overall and 2-6 in the Sun Belt. They never finished with a .500 or better record in the four seasons under Spavital, who took over prior to the 2019 season after successful stints as an offensive coordinator at Texas A&M, Cal, and West Virginia. Spavital leaves San Marcos with a 13-35 record in charge. He was 9-23 in Sun Belt competition. The Bobcats went 3-9 in his first year at the helm back in 2019. The number dipped to two wins in 2020. Texas State won four games in 2021 for the first time since 2014, but a second straight 4-8 campaign sealed his fate. Texas State moved to the FBS ranks in 2012. The Bobcats have only finished above .500 once – that was in 2014 with Dennis Franchione as the head coach. The only other record at .500 or better was a 6-6 finish in 2013. Everett Withers was 7-29 in his three years in charge from 2016 to 2018. Franchione was 20-28.
