Fort Bend Hightower Begins Interviews

Fort Bend ISD has started the process of hiring a new head football coach at Hightower after the departure of Joseph Sam, who returned to the DFW area in mid-March taking the head football job at Arlington Bowie.

 An initial pool of 15 candidates was narrowed down to six candidates who interviewed Friday and will wrap up Wednesday.

Initially three internal candidates applied but reports are that internal field is down to just one and early reports are three assistants from the Houston area and two current head coaches from the Houston area are in the final field of six.

Look for both Hamlin and Merkel to hire their new head football coaches this week, Hamlin has a school board meeting scheduled for Monday night where they’ll look to replace Russell Lucas who left for Class 4A Sweetwater where he is now the HFC/AD. Merkel will hold a school board meeting this week to name their next HFC/AD as they look to hire their fourth head coach in four years as they look to replace Britt Hart who took over at Stamford after just one season leading the Badgers.

In other Big Country news, Haskell opened up as head coach Brian Hodnett departs after four seasons to become the offensive coordinator at Sweetwater under new head coach Russell Lucas.

Burkburnett Names Waco Midway OC as Head Coach

According to Jonathan Hull of the Wichita Falls Times-Record News, Waco Midway OC Bret Boyd will officially be named the next HFC at Burkburnett. Boyd, who played his high school ball at Harlingen, has been an assistant at Irving MacArthur, Crandall, Odessa High, Colleyville Heritage, Justin Northwest and Midway. Boyd was a head coach for one season in 2008 at Hillsboro as well.

Boyd will be the co-AD with longtime boys basketball coach Danny Nix and then assume the AD role full time in the fall of 2022, Nix has been at Burkburnett for forty years.

Jens Anderson Moves Into Elgin ISD Admin

Elgin ISD will have new leadership in the athletic department as HFC/AD Jens Anderson moves into an administrative role in the district after leading the Wildcats for the past four seasons. It was a tough four year stretch for the Wildcats whose best record was a 4-6 mark in 2018.
