This year’s coaching carousel was the busiest in the five years I have spent covering the sub-FBS ranks for Dave Campbell’s Texas Football. When the 2023 season begins, it will mark the beginning of a new era for 11 teams in Texas. Sub-FBS insider Cory Hogue takes a stab at grading each new hire based on how the new coach fits with their new program, the excitement of the fan base and athletes around the hire, assistant coaches hired thus far, the support each coach will receive from the administration, and the coach’s chance to succeed at their new school.

  • Peter Rossomando finalized his Lamar coaching staff with four additions. Todd Macon will serve as running backs coach after spending the 2022 season in the same role with Mary Hardin-Baylor. Daryl Daleen will serve as co-special teams coordinator and inside linebackers coach alongside fellow co-special teams coordinator and outside linebackers coach Dave Stedman. Andrew Sparano will serve as tight ends coach for the Cardinals after spending last year at Chowan University.

  • Texas A&M-Commerce announced the addition of three new members to the Lions coaching staff. Dave Ewart was named offensive line coach, while Bobby Bounds will serve as director of player personnel, and John McWilliams will assume the role of director of football strength and conditioning. The addition of a strength and conditioning coach solely for football is a new position for the Lions. The lack of a strength coach to focus strictly on football was reportedly a sticking point between the school and the previous coaching staff.

  • Dave Campbell's Texas Football extends our condolences toward the family of Tarleton, the city of Stephenville, and all who feel loss after assistant coach Marc Martinez died in a motor vehicle accident Friday morning. Martinez arrived at Tarleton in 2011 after graduating from Waco Midway High School and never left Stephenville. He was a standout linebacker for the Texans during his playing career, where he was a two-time All-Lone Star Conference selection and led the team in tackles during his senior season. Martinez transitioned into a full-time position in 2017 and served as linebackers coach and summer camp coordinator before his death. Martinez was 30 years old and is survived by his wife, Laci, and two daughters, Estella and Camilla. A friend of Laci's has set up a Go Fund Me page to help the family with expenses during this difficult time. If you wish to contribute, you can donate here.

  • Name, Image, and Likeness deals have dominated college football headlines, but schools like Sam Houston need to find the sweet spot between using big-dollar donors for facility improvements while giving small-dollar donors a way to contribute to the athletes. The Kat Fund seeks to find the balance by using membership tiers to entice fans to give money that will be used for the athlete's appearances in person and on social media for various charities and local high schools.

Lone Star Conference

  • Three full-time Midwestern State coaches have departed since the end of the 2022 season. Offensive coordinator Josh Miller has accepted a job as an offensive analyst at Purdue, offensive line coach Garrett Graf is now co-offensive coordinator and offensive line coach at Colorado State-Pueblo, and wide receivers coach Joshua Atkinson also joined the CSU-Pueblo staff as wide receivers coach and recruiting coordinator. Sources indicate head coach Bill Maskill chose to focus on the Mustangs recruiting class and began researching candidates to fill the staff openings within the last week.
