Southland Conference

  • Five UIW Cardinals have an opportunity to play in the NFL following the 2023 NFL Draft. Kelechi Anyalebechi, Taylor Grimes, and Marcus Cooper signed as undrafted free agents with the Los Angeles Rams, Denver Broncos, and Seattle Seahawks, respectively. 2022 Walter Payton Award winner Lindsey Scott Jr. was invited to the New York Jets and Tampa Bay Buccaneers rookie minicamps, while Chris Whitaker was invited to the Broncos rookie minicamp.

  • Texas A&M-Commerce defensive back Darius Williams was invited to the San Francisco 49ers rookie minicamp. Williams defended eight passes and forced three fumbles for the Lions defense last year.

  • Houston Christian continues to add to its impressive recruiting class with the addition of defensive lineman RJ Orebo. The Dayton, Texas native committed to Texas A&M out of high school and transferred to Southern Illinois last year. According to some recruiting services, the Huskies have signed the top recruiting class in the Southland and a Top-10 class in FCS.

United Athletic Conference

  • The UAC announced an intention to move from FCS to FBS "at the earliest possible date," according to a report by ESPN in December. However, it's noticeable that the UAC didn't put an exact timeline on when they plan to transition to FBS. I asked FCS coaches around Texas whether some of the schools in the UAC would follow the path of Sam Houston, who is leaving the conference formerly known as the WAC for Conference USA this year.

  • The NCAA has denied the United Athletic Conference's waiver to be recognized as a single-sport FCS conference, according to a report by Chris Vannini at The Athletic. What does this mean for the merger formerly known as the ASUN-WAC alliance? Not much at this time. The denial was not unexpected, and the NCAA's moratorium on single-sport conferences is set to expire on June 1 unless extended by the Board of Directors. If the moratorium is extended, conference officials believe they will receive a waiver similar to the one they've received the last two years to maintain its automatic qualifier status for the FCS playoffs.

  • Stephen F. Austin edge BJ Thompson was selected in the fifth round with the 166th pick in the 2023 NFL Draft by the Kansas City Chiefs. Wide Receiver Xavier Gipson signed as an undrafted free agent with the New York Jets following the conclusion of the draft.

  • Abilene Christian is set to play a challenging schedule in 2023 with expectations of competing for the UAC title. The Wildcats host national semifinalist and two-time Southland champion UIW in Week 3 before beginning conference play at Central Arkansas. ACU has two games scheduled against FBS foes: a visit to North Texas in Week 5 and a trip to College Station to meet Texas A&M in the final week of the regular season.

American Southwest Conference

  • Our condolences to the family of Zachary Herman and the Texas Lutheran community after the 27-year-old died following a months-long battle with A.L.L. Leukemia. The Lake Travis product was recruited to play football for TLU before transitioning to become a full-time track and field athlete. Herman set a new record at TLU in the hammer throw and earned All-Region honors in his junior and senior seasons. Herman was diagnosed with Leukemia on July 20, 2022, and was TLU's recipient of the SCAC "Change for the Better" campaign, which raised nearly $3,500 to support Herman during his battle.

  • Riley Zayas of TruToTheCru.com reports that running back Ozias Wright is transferring to Mary Hardin-Baylor for the 2023 season. The former Sul Ross State standout is a two-time All-ASC selection and has gained 1,230 rushing yards on 265 attempts with 10 touchdowns while averaging 4.6 yards per rush with the Lobos. Wright is one of the favorites to earn the nod as starting running back following the graduation of Aphonso Thomas.

Southwestern Junior College Football Conference

  • Former Blinn wide receiver Xavier Hutchinson was selected in the sixth round of the 2023 NFL Draft by the Houston Texans with the 205th overall pick. Hutchinson was a finalist for the 2022 Biletnikoff Award presented to the top receiver in NCAA Division I during his senior season at Iowa State.

  • Kilgore presented rings to the Rangers 2022 SWJCFC championship team members before their annual Blue/Gray spring game last Saturday. Kilgore finished last year with an 8-4 record and is set to return 15 lettermen from last season's roster. The Rangers are expected to shift into an up-tempo offense for the 2023 campaign.
