The American Southwest Conference will use a unique format typically found in the NFL for the 2024 football season, sources confirmed to Dave Campbell’s Texas Football.

The conference will use a double round-robin format, with each team playing a home-and-home series against the other three ASC teams. The new format leaves each school needing to find four non-conference games.

Sources have indicated that Howard Payne needs one more non-conference opponent. The Yellow Jackets are expected to play SAGU, Lyon, and Wittenberg next season. One team that has struggled the most in finding non-conference opponents in recent years is Hardin-Simmons. However, sources indicate the Cowboys have two opponents set with another foe awaiting contract approval.

The ASC is a four-team league searching for a path to retain an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III playoffs. Sul Ross State is departing for the Lone Star Conference following a nearly 48-year absence. Texas Lutheran and Austin College were affiliate members of the ASC but will remain in the SCAC, who is restarting football in 2024. McMurry announced their decision to join the SCAC last year.
