The Texas sub-FBS ranks may soon be expanding, with Schreiner expected to soon begin a football program, according to The Kerr County Lead. Schreiner University President Charlie McCormick gave the Kerrville City Council a presentation on the university’s plan to expand earlier in October.
McCormick expects the university’s board of regents to finalize the plan soon, which includes funding for a football stadium and a track and field complex. Schreiner would also add a women’s swimming program.
The Mountaineers would compete in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference, which seems likely to sponsor football beginning in 2024. Current SCAC members that sponsor football are Trinity, Texas Lutheran, Southwestern, and Austin College. All four of those schools are affiliated with other conferences for football.
The SCAC will become the 29th conference with an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III playoffs in 2024, leaving only three bids for at-large schools, independent schools, and conferences that don’t meet the minimum number of teams required (six) for an automatic bid.
Lamar LB Adrian Owens announced his intention to enter the transfer portal in December. Owens had 65 tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss, two sacks, two forced fumbles, and two passes defended in 17 games with the Cardinals.
Cardinals WR Tyrique Carter also announced his intention to enter the transfer portal. The sophomore from Huntsville has appeared in nine games over the last two seasons.
Western Athletic Conference
The WAC announced it has moved the conference office from Denver to Arlington. The league’s office is less than five miles from AT&T Stadium, Globe Life Park, Choctaw Stadium, and Texas Live.
Stephen F. Austin picked up a commitment from 2023 WR/DB Jarvis Anderson, who will play football and run track for the Lumberjacks. Last summer, Carter Yates penned a story for Dave Campbell’s on how Anderson has overcome being deaf to achieve his dreams.
Sam Houston DB Taylen Blaylock announced his intention to enter the transfer portal. The sophomore has three years of eligibility remaining and appeared in three games this season after playing 19 games the previous two seasons.
Lone Star Conference
Angelo State sits atop the Super Region Four rankings released on Monday. The Rams are the only LSC team that would have a spot if the playoffs began this week. Texas A&M-Kingsville is barely outside the top seven that receive a playoff berth at eighth, while Central Washington is the 10th and final team ranked this week.
American Southwest Conference
If TLU and Austin College depart the ASC following the 2023 season, the conference will have five teams that play football and will be below the minimum number of teams (six) needed for an automatic bid to the playoffs. Therefore, the conference will try and add another member that sponsors football or risk losing their automatic bid if they don’t add a school before the 2026 season.
Southern Athletic Association
If Trinity departs for the SCAC, the SAA will remain in a strong position with seven members that play football remaining.
