Wayland Baptist will soon name former Burnet head coach Bryan Wood as offensive coordinator, sources have confirmed to Dave Campbell’s Texas Football. Wood heads into the collegiate ranks after spending 23 years as a Texas High School football head coach.

Wood arrives in Plainview with an impressive 203-84 overall record, and he led five teams to the state quarterfinals. He spent seven seasons at Canyon Randall, where he led the Raiders to a 64-23 record and four appearances in the state quarterfinals in seven seasons. Wood led Shallowater to a 39-9 record and a trip to the state quarterfinals in 2018 in four years.

Wood’s arrival gives the Pioneers a coach who spent four years on the Texas High School Coaches Association Board of Directors and is a co-leader of the THSCA Rock Mentorship Program.

Most recently, Wood served as head coach at Burnet for three years, where he led the Bulldogs to a 15-17 record. The Bulldogs thrived under Wood’s leadership in 2023, finishing with an 8-4 record and the program’s first appearance in the area round of the playoffs since 2014.

Wood is tasked with turning around a WBU offense that hasn’t averaged more than 22 points per game since 2018. The Pioneers finished 2-8 in their first season under head coach Marcos Hinojos Sr. WBU’s offense scored less than 20 points in seven contests last year, averaging 2.6 yards per rushing attempt and committing 22 turnovers.
