In a surprise announcement Thursday morning, Prosper High School head coach Brandon Schmidt resigned his post after seven incredibly successful seasons leading the Eagles. Multiple reports indicate Schmidt is headed to College Station to become the new head coach at A&M Consolidated.

Schmidt, a native of La Marque who played in two state title games as a player at the high school level, played his college ball at Sam Houston State before getting into coaching. His early coaching stops included time at LaPorte, Round Rock Stony Point and Cedar Park. Schmidt spent nine seasons at Cedar Park as an assistant and was on the staff that won a state title in 2012, much of that time was spent working under now Lovejoy head coach Chris Ross.

Schmidt made a move to the DFW area in 2015 joining Chris Ross’ staff at Prosper, but Ross departed Prosper after just one season to take a college job at Boise State. Schmidt was then promoted to head football coach, just as the fast growing community was first moving up to Class 6A.

Under Schmidt’s leadership, Prosper quickly became relevant on the extremely competitive DFW 6A scene going 7-4 in his first season, then putting together a 10-3 mark in 2017. After falling in the area playoffs in 2018, Schmidt’s Eagles took the next step advancing to the regional finals in three straight seasons from 2019-2021, including back-to-back heartbreaking losses to Denton Guyer in 2020 and 2021. Prosper took it a step further in 2022 posting a 13-2 mark and advancing to the 6A-Division I state semifinals before losing to eventual state champion Duncanville.  Overall in seven years, Schmidt compiled a 67-24 record.

Schmidt’s departure means Prosper ISD AD Valerie Little will have to begin a search for another head coach, just two days after PISD announced Tommy Allison as the first ever head coach at Walnut Grove High School, the district’s third high school opening in 2023.

Coach Schmidt takes over an A&M Consolidated program that’s seen success recently as Lee Fedora posted a 57-15 mark in six seasons before he resigned back in December.
