This spring marks only the fifth season in the history of the UT Permian Basin football program. While it is no surprise the Falcons have improved each season, the rate of progress has been impressive.

UTPB played its second road game of the spring last Saturday and used a solid defensive performance to defeat fellow Lone Star Conference foe Texas A&M-Kingsville 17-2.

The Falcons have set multiple program records this spring, including the first-ever four-game winning streak. The four victories are tied for the most in school history with the 2019 Falcons.

UTPB can finish the spring undefeated and carry a ton of momentum into the fall season if they can defeat Midwestern State at home next Saturday.

The key behind the Falcons success this spring has been on the defensive side of the ball. UTPB is holding its opponents to only 246 total yards and 10.5 points per game.

UTPB has been especially difficult to pass against this year. The Falcons allow 139.5 yards passing, 50 percent completion, and a measly 4.65 yards per attempt while intercepting 10 passes in four games.

The Falcons defense has been led by junior linebacker Miquon Mayes from Duncanville High School. Mayes has filled the void left by All-American Chris Hoad and leads UTPB with 37 tackles and 5.5 tackles for loss.

Senior D’Ondre Robinson has led the secondary. The Orange, N.J. native has intercepted four passes this season. Junior Trent Ward from Lubbock Monterey High School has two interceptions and is tied for the team lead with two pass breakups.

UPTB coach Justin Carrigan and staff have done a tremendous job building the Falcons program. They have an opportunity to take another giant step forward with a win over MSU on Saturday.
