Tornillo’s ISD school board on Thursday night voted to suspend their football program for the next two seasons at the varsity level due to low numbers and the risk of injury to the remaining players in the program.

Tornillo ISD superintendent Rosy Vega-Barrio confirmed the news in an email sent out to coaches in the newly formed District 3-3A Division II. That district is now left with just three teams for the next two seasons in Alpine, Crane and Anthony. Odessa Compass participated with Alpine and Crane in a district this past realignment, but was sent east to District 4-3A Division II in the most recent alignment. Will the UIL move Compass back west or will they leave 3-3A Division II with just three teams?

Tornillo has seen their share of struggles in football recently with low numbers along with long road trips and geographic isolation, that has been a bit alleviated the past two years, but the Coyotes have still struggled. In 2022, Tornillo failed to complete their season forfeiting their final four football games, last year there were talks of Tornillo forfeiting their playoff game against Wall, but the Coyotes did participate in the playoffs, they finished 0-10 and lost all their games by at least 43 points.

The long-struggling program has not seen a winning season since 1995 when they went 6-5.
