El Paso Pebble Hills head coach Mark Torres has been named the next head football coach at Hays Consolidated High School, Hays Consolidated ISD announced on Monday.

He replaces Les Goad, who announced his retirement shortly after the end of the season.

“Our family would like to thank God for putting us in a position to help Hays CISD and Hays High School add to an already strong tradition of championship standards and excellence," Torres said. "We will work tirelessly with our administration, student-athletes, and community to develop a program of Character, Commitment, and Culture, that we will all be proud of."

Torres has spent the past nine seasons leading Class 6A Pebble Hills in the El Paso area. He started the program from scratch in 2015 with a JV schedule before moving to varsity in 2016. In his eight seasons at the helm, Torres turned the Spartans into an area power posting 47-36 overall record, including an 18-5 record the past two seasons with a high-water mark of 10-2 in 2022. Torres led Pebble Hills to the playoffs in six of the last seasons with the only missed playoff appearance coming in 2020.

Hays Consolidated is coming off a 4-6 season in 5A-Division I. The Hawks did play in the 6A state semifinals in 2020, so there is a definitely still potential for Hays to be a playoff factor.

Torres is also part of one of two coaching trio of brothers who are head coaches in Texas. His brother Ruben Torres is currently the head coach at Marlin and brother Matt is currently the head coach at Houston Sharpstown.

Pebble Hills is one of the premier jobs in the Sun City and will generate plenty of interest from across the state.

“I can't really put into words what Sparta means to me right now," Torres said. "As well as the gratitude I have for Socorro ISD and all of the administrators, colleagues, players, and community. I'm truly blessed and it was such an honor to establish Pebble Hills. A dream come true."
