Wall head coach Houston Guy announced to his team on Thursday that he would not return as head coach after leading the program the past 17 seasons.

Guy advised he’ll be submitting his official letter of resignation late next week. The move comes with his son prepping for his senior year at Wall. ]

“My son really wants to play his senior season with his friends, so I may take a year away from coaching to enjoy that experience,” Guy said. “I definitely still want to coach and I have a lot of coaching left in me. I really appreciate my time at Wall. This has been a great place for my family. This community helped raise my family and raised me as a Coach, so it will always have a special place in my heart.”

Guy posted an impressive 167-49 overall record, the high-water mark coming in 2013 when Wall made a run all the way to the Class 3A-Division I state title game.

He led the Hawks to 14 winning seasons and 11 seasons of double digit wins, including eight straight years of 10-or-more wins from 2010-2017. Guy also spent time as an assistant coach at Valley View, Winters and Christoval. He’s been at Wall a total of 28-years, including the past 24-years (he had a four year stint as an assistant at Wall as a young coach).

Considering Wall’s success, an internal hire is definitely a possibility with a strong candidate on staff being defensive coordinator Craig Slaughter. Slaughter has been in Wall as the defensive coordinator since 2017 and has 15 years experience as a head coach with stints at Hearne, Clyde, Sweetwater and Llano. There’s no question there could be another potential staff member or two considered and if the job opens up to the outside. There’s no doubt the position will draw plenty of interest.
