Texas Southern is set to name Fred McNair head football coach within the next two days, sources have confirmed to Dave Campbell’s Texas Football. McNair’s arrival in Houston will cause a stir across the FCS landscape. He spent the last eight seasons at Southwestern Athletic Conference rival and his alma mater, Alcorn State.

McNair was very successful with the Braves, winning five division titles and two SWAC titles and making two appearances in the Celebration Bowl. He finished with a 48-33 overall record and was 37-17 against SWAC opponents.

Before joining the coaching ranks, McNair was a professional quarterback and spent time in the Canadian Football League and the Arena Football League, where he became the 13th quarterback in AFL history to throw for over 10,000 yards during his career. He is the brother of former Tennessee Titans quarterback Steve McNair.

McNair entered the coaching ranks at NCAA Division III Millsaps, which competes in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference. He spent four years with Millsaps before moving to the high school ranks. McNair was hired at his alma mater to serve as quarterbacks coach in 2013 and remained in that position until being promoted to head coach in 2016.

Multiple candidates have been rumored to have an interest in TSU. McNair inherits a program in much better shape than his predecessor, Clarence McKinney, whose contract was not renewed. The Tigers finished an injury-ravaged 2023 campaign with a 3-8 overall record and a 2-6 record in the SWAC.

The news was first reported by HBCU Sports.
