SAGU announced that head coach Greg Ellis resigned on Monday. Ellis led the Lions to an 11-10 overall record and an appearance in the 2022 NCCAA Victory Bowl during his two seasons at the helm.

"SAGU is extremely grateful for the time that Coach Ellis gave to SAGU and our football program," SAGU athletic director Dr. Jesse Godding said in a statement. "Coach Ellis did a tremendous job leading the program through a difficult time, and SAGU wishes him success in his future endeavors."

Following an illustrious playing career, Ellis spent one season as athletic director and head football coach at Texas College before joining the Lions. Ellis was an All-American defensive end at North Carolina, where he played for Mack Brown.

Following his collegiate career, Ellis embarked on a 12-year NFL career with the Dallas Cowboys and Oakland Raiders. His career was highlighted by a selection to the Pro Bowl and being named the NFL Defensive Comeback Player of the Year in 2007.

After retiring from the NFL, Ellis began a multimedia company and co-wrote and directed two stage plays, “Watch Night the Play” and “Juneteenth the Play,” that covered significant moments in American history.
