Former Mr. Texas Football Jonathon Brooks is out for the season with a torn ACL in his right knee suffered during the Week 11 win over TCU, Texas confirmed Sunday afternoon. Brooks, a former All-State selection at Hallettsville High School, was in the middle of a breakout season as a sophomore and was in Doak Walker Award contention as one of the top running backs in the country.

“We’re heartbroken for Jonathon,” said head coach Steve Sarkisian in a press release. “He was having a fantastic season and leaves a void that needs to be filled. But we know he will continue to be an invaluable leader on our team, helping us prepare as we move forward in our mission this season. I know he’ll work extremely hard in his recovery, get back to full speed as soon as he can, and we will be there by his side supporting him through all of that.”

Brooks rushed for 1,139 yards and 10 touchdowns before the injury. He had at least 98 rushing yards in eight straight games and ranks sixth in FBS rushing yards and seventh in yards per game. His primary backups are freshman CJ Baxter and sophomore Jaydon Blue.
