Waco Midway defensive coordinator Kaeron Johnson will be introduced next week as the next head football coach at Waco University, according to David Smoak of 365Sports.

He'll replace Kent Laster, who departed earlier this month to take over at Denton Braswell.

Johnson, a native of Cuero, played his college ball at Baylor where he was a three-year letterman before seeing his career cut short due to an injury.

He began his coaching career in the Waco area where he served as an assistant coach at Waco Connally for four seasons. He was on staff for one year at Magnolia and then was defensive coordinator at Katy Mayde Creek where he was part of a staff that turned that program around, posting a 9-3 mark in 2019.

Johnson spent one year as defensive coordinator at Conroe in 2020 before returning to Waco in 2021 to join Shane Anderson’s staff as the defensive coordinator at Waco Midway.

He takes over a program at University that a year ago posted its first playoff win since 2009 and heads into 2023 with high expectations.
