THREE DEFENSES THAT IMPRESSED

East Bernard
Perhaps we shouldn’t be surprised that the Brahmas’ defense showed out in College Station — they’d been dominant through the State Qualifying Tournaments and return five starters from a unt that ranked 4th in scoring defense in 3A Division II last season. But seeing them in person was an eye-opener, as guys like Blake Jedlicka and Braden Lemos locked down attack after attack en route to the Division III crown. East Bernard starts the year ranked No. 9 in Texas Football’s preseason 3A Division II rankings, and that’s looking like a strong projection after a weekend in the Brazos Valley.

Lake Travis
Most people pay attention to Lake Travis because of their offense, and for good reason — QB Bo Edmundson is the latest in a long line of outstanding Cavs’ signal-callers. But it’s probably time to give the defense its due, because it was a huge part of LT’s run to the Division I final. The showcase game for Derrick Johnson and company came in the quarterfinals against nemesis Austin Westlake, wherein the Cavs made Chaps’ QB Cade Klubnik — who had been torching opponents all weekend — look relatively ordinary by his standards. It was a coming out party for the Cavs’ less-heralded side of the ball.

Argyle
You’re never going to believe this, but Argyle’s defense looked great. Shocking, I know! In all seriousness, the Eagles’ defense looked its usual sharp self in College Station, as Will Ramsey helped guide them to the Division II title game. The phrase “reload, not rebuild” is certainly overused, but it fits with Argyle — the Eagles are always super-sound on the defensive side, with every player pulling the rope in the same direction, and the early indications are that 2021 will be no different for the defending 4A Division I champs.
