Texas State athletic director Dr. Larry Teis is stepping down from his role after 17 years on Aug. 31. Don Coryell will step in as interim AD.
The university notes that Teis has been having back issues over the last several years. Teis decided to retire from the role as travel became more difficult for him. For the next year, Teis will serve as special assistant to the president for athletics, a less intensive role.
"I appreciate Larry for his leadership and loyalty to Texas State, and I appreciate his willingness to play a significant role in the department during this time of transition," Texas State president Dr. Denise Trauth said in a statement.
Teis has been with the athletic department for more than 20 years since joining as associate AD for external operations in 1999. In 2004, he took over as athletic director. Under Teis' rule, Texas State jumped from FCS to FBS and moved from the Southland to the WAC to the Sun Belt.
Teis spearheaded four football hires: Brad Wright, Dennis Franchione, Everett Withers and Jake Spavital. The latter three combined to produce a 28-68 record since moving to the FBS level.
Coryell serves Texas State as execute senior AD of external operations. He joined Texas State in 2004 when Teis was promoted to athletic director.
