Unbeaten top teams in 4A DI face off next week

Stop me if you’ve heard this before: Waco La Vega and Argyle are the two best teams to start the year in 4A DI. That seems to be the story every year, right?

Well it’s no different in 2020 even despite the circumstances of everything surrounding the season. Now later on, we'll see if teams like Lampasas, Dumas or Corpus Christi Miller punch their way into that conversation but for now let's focus on the top two, especially because they face off next week.

No. 2 Waco La Vega has arguably the most impressive resume in the state in any classification with wins over No. 8 Port Lavaca Calhoun and 4A DII No. 7 Waco Connally in the first two weeks. Friday night, the Pirates added a physical 21-13 win over No. 7 Corpus Christi Calallen to the win column in San Marcos. No one's stacking the early season slate quite like Don Hyde's team.

No. 1 Argyle took care of business themselves against Celina, 35-21, Friday night to set up next week’s showdown. The Eagles’ offense has been in high-gear while the Pirates’ have been in low-scoring defensive battles. Does La Vega have the offensive firepower to stay with Argyle next week? Will it even need to or can the Pirate defense clip the Eagles for the first time this year?

Hello, Hamlin!

The No. 2 Pied Pipers had tons of hype coming into 2020 and rightfully so with a strong returning cast of players fresh off of a state finals trip in 2019 but did anyone see 42-6 coming against No. 6 Albany?! I know we certainly didn’t.

Hamlin forced four interceptions and held the Albany offense to zero first downs in the first half. The Pied Pipers have yet to give up more than seven points in a game so this season.

If only the three-time state champion Mart Panthers weren't still around or the Pied Pipers would have a real chance at calling themselves the front-runner in 2A DII. But regardless, after Friday night, Hamlin has a very good chance of going unbeaten through the remainder of the season. Consider the state on notice once again, Hamlin.

Okay Melissa, we’re listening

Since we're on the topic of statement wins, how do you grab our attention? Dominate the No. 3 team in 3A DI like unranked Melissa did Friday night.

Now, sure it was a 4A vs a 3A and Pottsboro QB Braden Plyler missed the first half, but 51-17 against a team that was in a state championship last year is nothing to take lightly especially since the Cardinals also had a big win over Sunnyvale last week and Celina in Week 1. The win snapped a 14-game win streak for Pottsboro.

Melissa’s next three tests, Stephenville, Paris and then top-ranked Argyle, will provide plenty of chances for Melissa to continue to show that they're for real.

Social Media Highlights

You can’t go a Friday night without an Ace Whitehead highlight and did we get one from Lampasas’ 57-28 win over Wimberley.

From a Texas baseball commit to a Texas football commit. Hallettsville RB Jonathon Brooks had himself a night versus Ganado with five touchdowns in three quarters.

Kennedale’s Aidan Birr nailed a game-winning 22-yard field goal as time expired to beat Sunnyvale!

From a game-winning field goal to a game-winning STOP. Lexington star prospect Jarred Kerr helped shut down 3A DI No. 6 Rockdale’s two-point conversion attempt to seal the win for the No. 7 team in 3A DII.
