Texas State fortified its offensive line with the addition of Texas offensive lineman J.P. Urquidez as a graduate transfer. Urquidez has one year of eligibility remaining.

Urquidez comes to San Marcos after 15 appearances in four seasons at Texas, including 13 primarily on special teams as a junior. With his 6-foot-7, 300-pound frame, Urquidez is physically imposing enough to play either tackle or guard at Texas State.

The Bobcats are losing starters Aaron Brewer and Jacob Rowland from their offensive line unit to graduation. Urquidez will try and improve an offensive line that ranked bottom five in rushing offense, bottom 10 in total offense and bottom 30 in sacks allowed.

Urquidez will pair nicely with likely starting quarterback Brady McBride, who is expected to play under center after transferring from Memphis in 2019.

Before arriving on the 40 Acres, Urquidez was one of the top recruits in Central Texas. He earned all-state and All-America honors at Copperas Cove and an honorable mention on the Dave Campbell’s Super Team. He picked Texas over offers from LSU, Clemson and Oklahoma.

The Statesman reports that Texas State could have more graduate transfers join the program from Power Five schools in the coming weeks.
