Brownsville ISD announced on Thursday night that Veterans Memorial head coach Kelley Lee had resigned his post after two seasons leading the Chargers program.

2022 was a banner year for Brownsville Veterans Memorial as they posted a 10-3 record and advanced to the third round of the playoffs before falling to PSJA North. It was just the second time in school history that Vets had won ten games in a season and it was the school’s deepest playoff run in school history. Also of note, Brownsville Vets hosted that third round playoff game at Sams Stadium and it was the first time ever, the historic venue in the Rio Grade Valley hosted a regional semifinal game.

Lee leaves Brownsville Veterans Memorial with a 17-7 record overall in two seasons, prior to coming to the Valley, Lee was at Division II Eastern New Mexico University from 2012-2020. Lee was offensive coordinator from 2012-2016 and was head coach from 2017-2020, although ENMU did not play in 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Rumors are swirling a return to Eastern New Mexico could be in the cards for Coach Lee as the timing of Lee’s resignation does coincide with an announcement from ENMU that a new head coach will be hired on Monday January 9. Dave Campbell’s Texas Football has not been able to secure independent confirmation of these rumors at this time.

Brownsville ISD, led by athletic director Gilbert Leal is expected to begin the search for a new head coach at Veterans Memorial immediately, VMHS is the newest high school in Brownsville ISD and is located on the western edge of town where much of the city’s new growth is situated so this will undoubtedly be an attractive job opening in the RGV.
