One name to watch in the Texas A&M-Commerce head coaching search is current SFA offensive coordinator Matt Storm. Strom was the offensive coordinator during the Lions 2017 national title campaign and was named the 2017 NCAA Division II Coordinator of the Year by FootballScoop. However, with the Lion Wire reporting of changes forthcoming in the athletic department’s administration, the search for a head coach may need to wait for a resolution.
Western Athletic Conference
The Stephen F. Austin Board of Regents voted to join the University of Texas System on Tuesday. The Texas Legislature will hold a vote during its next legislative session on whether to approve the move. SFA was a hot commodity attracting offers from all four systems. The Lumberjacks are expected to keep their autonomy, name, mascot, and school colors. The SFA Board of Regents stated the UT System was the primary option due to access to the Permanent University Fund, which consists of assets created by oil and gas revenue. The revenue is generated from 2.1 million acres of land in West Texas, which reportedly brings in a billion dollars annually.
Lone Star Conference
UTPB head football coach Justin Carrigan stepped down after starting the football program in 2016. The school announced Carrigan would stay within the athletics department and assume a role as Deputy Athletic Director. Todd Dooley, the UPTB Vice President for Athletics, said the university would begin a nationwide search for a new football coach.
American Southwest Conference
Mary Hardin-Baylor was not the only team to win as the road squad last weekend in the NCAA Division III playoffs. Bethel defeated Linfield 30-13, which resulted in the Cru hosting Bethel on Saturday in a national quarterfinal. UMHB will need a win this week and have Ithaca pull off a road win over North Central (Ill) to host a national semifinal.
Sooner Athletic Conference
Wayland Baptist head coach Butch Henderson submitted his resignation after leading the Pioneers since restarting the program in 2012. Henderson led the Pioneers to a winning record, a No. 22 ranking in 2016, and a transition to the Sooner Athletic Conference in 2018. Henderson finishes with a 32-75 overall record and a 20-49 record in conference play. Defensive coordinator Marcos Hinojos will serve as interim head coach while WBU searches for a new coach.
Southwestern Junior College Football Conference
