This one was for The City.

South Oak Cliff used a balance attack offensively and combined it with a stout defensive performance against Liberty Hill’s tricky Slot-T to claim the Class 5A Division I UIL Football State Championship on Friday.

It seemed like all of south Dallas showed up at AT&T Stadium to support the Golden Bears, who won the first Dallas ISD state championship since 1958 and the first in program history.

SOC quarterback Kevin Henry-Jennings showed why SMU is so high on him with 144 yards and two touchdowns through the air to earn offensive MVP honors.

His pinpoint accuracy was on full display on his 17-yard touchdown to Corintheon Coleman on 4th-and-10 in the first quarter, which put SOC up 7-0. He followed that up with a 27-yard strike to Jamyri “Wildman” Cauley to put the Golden Bears up 14 early in the second quarter.

Liberty Hill got its offense churning in the second quarter with a pair of TDs from Andon Thomas to tie the game at half. His 1-yard TD with 11 seconds left in the first was the last score until SOC hit a 28-yard field goal with 8:25 to go in the third.

The Golden Bears (14-1) took control of the game on the ensuing kickoff when they recovered a fumble at the Liberty Hill 27. SOC added a late touchdown from Qualon Farrar to put the game on ice and send its fans into a frenzy.

Farrar rushed for 52 yards while Ke’Undra Hollywood finished with 71 yards. The receiver core for the Golden Bears made jaw dropping plays all day. Cauley and Coleman each had an athletic touchdown while Kylin Mathis finished with the most yards with 53. DB Abdul Muhammad finished with 13 tackles and defensive MVP honors for locking down the field.

QB/RB Joe Pitchford was the main driver on the ground for Liberty Hill (13-2) with 158 yards. RBs Noah Long and Andon Thomas both had over 40 yards.

DB Carlton Schrank disrupted passes with three PBUs and five tackles. DL Aaron Brewer lead the team in tackles with eight as well as a tackle for loss.
