Birdville ISD on Thursday night named Southlake Carroll offensive coordinator Chris Smith the next head football coach at Birdville High School.

Smith steps in to replace Lon Holbrook, who was promoted to a position in the Birdville ISD athletic department after leading the Hawks the past nine seasons.

Smith, who is known around the state as one of the top offensive line coaches in high school, has spent the past four seasons as the Dragons offensive coordinator where he’s helped lead one of the state’s most prolific offensive attacks. He was on staff as Carroll made a run to the Class 6A-Division I state championship game.

He also spent time on Scott Surratt’s staff at Carthage where was part of five state championship teams and where Smith and current Birdville ISD Athletic Director Barry Norton have a connection as Surratt was once an assistant coach under Norton at Texarkana Texas High.

Smith also has experience in the college game as he spent three seasons at Texas A&M as an offensive quality control coach under then A&M head coach Kevin Sumlin. He takes over a Birdville program that posted a 4-6 record a year ago and surprisingly missed out on the playoffs.
