Smithville ISD named Fort Bend Ridge Point co-offensive coordinator Layne Neumann as its next athletic director/head football coach on Wednesday night. He replaces Smithville alum Cyril Adkins, who resigned his post in January.

Neumann, a native of Hondo, was a kicker at Texas A&M and began his coaching career shortly after earning his degree in College Station.

He has spent all of his career as an assistant in the Houston area starting out as an assistant at Crosby before stints as an assistant coach at Clear Brook, Baytown Lee, La Porte and George Ranch.

After George Ranch Coach, Neumann got his first chance at a coordinator gig when he joined the staff at Dickinson as special teams coordinator. He moved on to become the co-offensive coordinator at Humble Summer Creek before taking over special teams at Manvel. He took over as the co-oc at Fort Bend Ridge Point for the 2023 season.

“I’m a small town guy," Neumann said. "Smithville reminds me a lot of my hometown and getting this job allows me to get back to my roots. Everybody cares here. They are all in for the Tigers and when I came in to do the interviews the people were inviting and hospitable. It didn’t feel like an interview at all. It felt more like a conversation."

Neumann hopes to get to Smithville to get started right after spring break, pending HR release from Fort Bend ISD.
