Texas State had its next defensive coordinator on its staff already.

GJ Kinne will promote safeties coach Dexter McCoil Sr. to defensive coordinator following the departure of Jonathan Patke, who accepted the same position at Duke. Matt Zenitz of 247Sports was first to report.

McCoil, 32, followed Kinne to San Marcos following a one-year stint at Incarnate Word for the 2022 season where he was also safeties coach. His biggest coaching job was mentoring Kaleb Culp to becoming an FCS All-American in 2022.

McCoil played alongside Kinne at Tulsa and was a Freshman All-America Honorable mention. He set the Conference USA career interceptions mark.
