Texas State made headlines last week when Arizona quarterback Jayden de Laura transferred to the Bobcats. That caused a chain reaction that led to incumbent starter TJ Finley, who led the Bobcats to their first bowl win and most wins in program history, to transfer to Western Kentucky. Texas State confirmed Wednesday afternoon that de Laura is no longer at Texas State and won't be part of the football program.

"Jayden de Laura has withdrawn from Texas State University as a student and will not be part of the Texas State football program," Texas State said in a statement.

The move was controversial because de Laura was involved with a civil case in Hawaii that alleged sexual assault against a fellow minor while he was still in high school. De Laura began his college career at Washington State and eventually transferred to Arizona. He lost his job after an injury in 2023. He’s thrown for over 8,000 yards in his career and is a dual-threat quarterback.

Texas State is now without a proven quarterback heading into an important 2024 season that includes seven home games. The. Bobcats hope to springboard off the historic 2023 campaign into Sun Belt championship contention. But now, the questions heading into spring will be about roster management and the hole at quarterback rather than how Texas State capitalizes on recent success.
