Corsicana ISD is turning to one of its own to try and rebuild things in Navarro County by naming Waxahachie defensive coordinator and Corsicana alum Eugene Rogers as the next head football coach at Corsicana High School.
Rogers is a 1984 graduate of Corsicana, so he understands the tradition and expectation of Tigers faithful.
“With tradition comes responsibility," he said. "I’m putting the pressure on me to live up to the standard set before me of the great coaches and players who came before me."
After graduating from Southwest Texas State (now Texas State), Rogers began his coaching career at Palestine before coming to Corsicana in 1991 as an assistant coach. Rogers became North Crowley's DC in 1998 where he helped spearhead the Panthers to a 4A Division I state title.
He got his first chance to lead a program in 2005 at Manor High School in the Austin area. Rogers spent four seasons at Manor leading the Mustangs before returning to the DFW area where he was an assistant at Denton Ryan. He was on a staff in 2010 that coached in a state title game.
Rogers became Haltom's DC in 2012 before taking head coaching position at North Crowley in 2013.
Rogers spent two seasons as Denton High’s defensive coordinator before coming to Waxahachie in 2021 to serve as Shane Tolleson’s defensive coordinator. Rogers coached Tolleson in days as a player at Corsicana High School.
“I wouldn’t be in this position right now if it wasn’t for Shane Tolleson," Rogers said. "He hired me to be his defensive coordinator, head track and I got to be his right-hand man. I painted the picture the way he saw it. He’s just a winner and he’s called to be a coach and a great leader and I saw it in him as a player and a young coach.
"Waxahachie was great to me and my wife. It’s not easy to leave. I can’t say enough about the kids here. I love those kids to death. I’m so excited to come home and work in Corsicana. I feel like this is my time and I’m called to come home and try to get Corsicana back to playing the winning football they are accustomed to."
