Graham ISD has announced the promotion of defensive coordinator Clay McChristian to athletic director/head football coach at Graham High School.

McChristian replaces Kenny Davidson, who announced his retirement on December 19.

McChristian, who has been at Graham since 2009, is a native of Fort Davis and earned his degree from Angelo State. He’s served as an assistant coach at Lamesa, Scurry-Rosser, Millsap and Stanton before coming to Graham.

Considering the success at Graham, it is no surprise the school district elected to keep the hiring internal as Davidson retires as Graham’s all-time winningest coach. Davidson posted an impressive 127-49 record in fourteen seasons leading the Steers, including four trips to the state semifinals in 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2017.

McChristian inherits a Graham squad that has high expectations heading into 2024 as the Steers return the vast majority of players from a team that posted a 10-2 record in 2023. In fact, don’t be surprised if Graham is a pick by many in the preseason to win the Class 4A-Division II Region I title.
