Port Neches-Groves (13-1) vs. Liberty Hill (10-4), 7 p.m. Friday at Cypress’ Cy-Fair FCU Stadium: It’s a rematch of the 5A-Division II state semifinal from a year ago as Liberty Hill, playing in its fourth consecutive state semifinal, takes on Port Neches-Groves, which won this meeting a year ago.

Port Neches-Groves won a slugfest a week ago as the Indians slipped past Huntsville, 24-14. QB Connor Bailey tossed a pair of touchdowns, and the Indians offensive line controlled the action and kept an explosive Huntsville offense bottled up.

Liberty Hill and its vaunted Slot-T offense avenged a regular season loss to San Antonio Pieper with an impressive 28-14 win. Noah Long led the way with 143 yards on the ground and three touchdowns, while Ben Carter added 135 yards on the ground as well.

Liberty Hill’s defense played one of its best games of the year holding an explosive Pieper attack to just 14 points.

The Indians have one of the state’s best defensive units and they seemed to solve the mystery that is the Liberty Hill Slot-T attack. I think they find just enough to get to their second straight state title game.
