Port Neches-Groves (11-1) vs. Montgomery Lake Creek (12-0), 4 p.m. Friday at Houston’s Sheldon ISD Panther Stadium: The Region III title could get decided this week as last year’s state runner-up Port Neches-Groves looks to slow down one of the state’s most explosive offensive units in Lake Creek.

The Lions average just shy of 52 points per game, while PNG’s defense is considered one of the best in the state, so the matchup should be fascinating.

PNG rolled to an easy 51-14 win over Leander Rouse last week. The Indians were led by the rushing attack with Blair Chatagnier and Isaiah Nguyen putting up big numbers behind a big and physical offensive line.

Lake Creek blasted upstart Austin Crockett, 78-27. RB Tyvonn Byars is a force for Lake Creek, but the concern for the Lions is if its battle tested enough? The Lions did flame out in the third round of the playoffs a year ago, but this year’s team is improved on defense and the strength of schedule has leaped forward as three of the four finalists come from 10-5A Division II.

That being said, PNG’s strength on defense and in the trenches is the difference in this showdown.
