Denton Ryan offensive assistant coach Mark Humble willbe named the next head coach at Killeen Harker Heights, Killeen ISD announced on Wednesday. He'll Jerry Edwards, who stepped down in March after 10 seasons to take over as head coach at Colleyville Heritage.

Humble, a native of Killeen and graduate of Killeen High School, has experience as a head coach as he opened up Prosper Rock Hill in 2019 and led them in the first varsity season in 2020. Humble has spent the last two seasons on staff at Denton Ryan.

“I’m really grateful," Humble said. "There’s so much nostalgia for me coming home. My foundation was laid as a student in Killeen ISD and to come home and coach kids and serve a community that helped build me is so exciting. With Fort Hood being here, this community epitomizes service and I want to serve these kids at Harker Heights. it’s what it’s all about."

He has also spent time on staff as an assistant at Frisco Lone Star, Southlake Carroll and Plano East. He takes over Killeen ISD’s only Class 6A program at the moment fresh off their best season in school history, a 12-2 mark and a regional final appearance.

Taking over a 12-2 team won’t be easy as expectations will no doubt still be high for the Knights going into 2023.

“Coach Edwards and his staff did an amazing job," he said. "Being a Killeen ISD guy, I followed them and the great run they had. This is a good football job, but it’s a good athletics job too. The principal and athletic director have a yearning for success and that was attractive to me when going through the process and getting to learn more. KISD is a great school district and great athletic department and my goal is continuing to grow the brand and the success in all sports and in the classroom."
