Grapevine-Colleyville ISD is expected to name Killeen Harker Heights head coach Jerry Edwards as the next head football coach at Colleyville Heritage.

He will take over for Kirk Martin who resigned in February to return to Manvel to be the Mavericks head coach.

Edwards has spent the last 10 seasons leading Harker Heights, turning the Knights into one of the best teams in Central Texas - a far cry from when he took over and the Knights were a middle of the road program. Harker Heights has made the playoffs in four straight seasons, improving each year going from 4-7 in 2019, to 7-4 in 2020, 9-2 in 2021 and in 2022, Harker Heights posted a 12-2 mark advancing to the 6A-Division II Region II final, falling to eventual state champion DeSoto.

Edwards, a native of Quitman in East Texas, began his coaching career at Milano where he spent two seasons. He was then hired by now Mansfield Legacy head coach Jeff Hulme at Fort Bend Clements where he spent four seasons. When Coach Hulme was hired at Mansfield High, Edwards came with Hulme to the DFW area where he spent five seasons as the Tigers defensive coordinator.

In 2013 Edwards was named head coach at Harker Heights where he’s posted a 53-55 overall record.

“Harker Heights and Killeen ISD is a great place," he said. "It’s not often in this business you stay in one place for 10 years. We helped change the culture at Harker Heights and not just in football but in all sports. There’s a sense of pride and I’m proud of what we built. Killeen is a unique place and it’s always going to hold a special place in our hearts."

He takes over a Colleyville Heritage squad that will once again be among the favorites in Class 5A-Division II Region I, so expectations will be high.

“Historically Colleyville has been a great program," Edwards said. "We liked the fact it’s a little bit smaller school and my kids are growing up and will be playing soon, so I wanted them to be in a place where they could multiple sports. The facilities are spectacular. DFW is a football hotbed and it’s exciting to get there and coach. I’m a competitor and want to compete against the best. The administration in GCISD has been phenomenal and I’m excited to work with them."
