The working assumption was that Oklahoma and Texas would find a way to get out of the Big 12 and join the SEC prior to the 2025 exit date. Not so fast, my friends, at least according to Pete Thamel at ESPN. Negotiations have stalled between the two defectors, the Big 12, and the television networks that truly control college football.

This could be a negotiating tactic. Conferences and television stations use the media to negotiate all the time. None of this is set in stone and there will likely be a few more twists and turns before the Longhorns and Sooners ride off into the sunset. But, the lack of progress into a 2024 departure means another season of a 14-team Big 12 is a real possibility.
