Sul Ross offensive coordinator Kevin Canty passed away on July 19 after a battle with Covid-19. He was 37.
Canty was an All-American offensive lineman for D-II Wingate College and won 23 games in three years as a letterman with the program. After graduating in 2006, he joined the staff as an assistant coach.
After a 14-year coaching career that stretched everywhere from Maine to North Carolina, Sul Ross hired Canty as offensive coordinator in Feb. 2020. Despite joining as a coach right as the pandemic led to shutdowns, Canty coached four offensive players to the ASC All-Conference team.
"Those who knew Coach Canty were not surprised by his success," Sul Ross president Pete Gallego wrote in a statement. "He put all of himself – his whole being; his entire self and all of his energy – into helping the students he coached. He used his personal experiences to mentor anyone who wanted to improve their football skills – and their lives."
Sul Ross and Canty's alma mater of Wingate have organized a GoFundMe to help his family deal with end of life expenses.
"If you had the honor to know Kevin Canty, you instantly knew everything about him was larger than life: his stature, his personality and his passion for life," Wingate Football wrote in the GoFundMe. "His family, friends, former teammates and players he has coached have endless memories of how he impacted their lives."
