Texas coach Tom Herman will remain as head coach of the Longhorns in 2021, according to a report from the Statesman

"With the close of the regular season, I want to reiterate that Tom Herman is our coach," Texas athletic director Chris Del Conte said in a statement to the AAS.

The decision comes on the heels of Texas cancelling its last game of the regular season against Kansas due to COVID-19 in the Longhorns program. The Longhorns failed to make the Big 12 championship game for the third time in four seasons, and captains Sam Cosmi and Caden Sterns opted out of the season after a loss to Iowa State.

However, the 6-3 record and .667 winning percentage in 2020 ranks as the second-best at Texas since 2012. Herman's record of 24-12 over the past three seasons ranks as the best stretch since 2009-11.

Longhorn administrators reportedly looked into former Ohio State coach Urban Meyer, but Meyer decided not to return to coaching. If Texas had moved on from Herman, it would owe him $15 million and assistants another $10 million.

Texas' decision comes a week before the early National Signing Day. The Longhorns' class ranks No. 17 in the nation, far down from the No. 8 in 2020.
