Cutting the brakes across the state

What got into Texas high school football this week?

It seemed like in every corner of the state, we had shootouts coming down pipeline. Games in the 40s, 50s and even the 90s. And no, those aren't ncluding six-man football scores!

We’ll run through a few and list some more. Southlake Carroll beat Rockwall-Heath 72-57 as Quinn Ewers kicked off his 2020 season throwing for 384 yards and five touchdowns. Per Brian Gosset of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, the teams combined for 1,292 yards of total offense. Heath’s Josh Hoover had 416 yards through the air.

What were some other high-scoring 11-man games that stood out? Check these:

  • 6A No. 16 Rockwall 60, Dallas Jesuit 38
  • Wolfforth Frenship 49, Burleson Centennial 42
  • Justin Northwest 63, McKinney North 49
  • Bryan Rudder 63, Pflugerville Weiss 56
  • Tomball Memorial 66, Beaumont West Brook 63
  • Azle 61, Everman 48
  • Blanco 41, Canyon Lake 40
  • Little River Academy 45, McGregor 42

And that's still not all of them...

But the highlight of the night was easily Eastland 91, Panhandle 71. Both teams combined for over 1,500 yards. Texas Tech commit Behren Morton threw for 425 yards and five touchdowns and had over 100 yards on the ground as well. It’s the fourth-highest scoring 11-man game since 1951.

Dallas powers show out

Was anyone worried about Allen and DeSoto?

That's really more of a rhetorical question because of course no one is, or at least they shouldn’t be. And they're definitely not after Friday night's results.

Both teams convincingly won beat other ranked 6A programs. 6A No. 6 Allen sent 6A No. 9 Atascocita back home with a 52-27 loss behind the arm of quarterback General Booty, nephew of former USC quarterback John David Booty. The California transfer threw for 260 and only recorded one incompletion. Atascocita had over 500 yards itself of offense but turned the ball over on downs three times in the first half allowing the Allen machine to roll early.

The more shocking outcome was the 37-0 shutout win by 6A No. 10 DeSoto over 6A No. 12 Converse Judson. The Eagles held Judson to just over 150 yards of offense and just 3.4 yards per pass. DeSoto played two quarterbacks throughout the game, both of whom threw for over 150 yards with De’Anthony Lewis recording a team-high 80 yards on nine carries. Jerand Bradley and Jaedon Wilson both had just under 100 yards receiving. The Rockets are replacing key playmakers from 2019, but DeSoto routing the premier program in San Antonio is something that should raise eyebrows.

Long story short, the Eagle looks scary-good to start 2020.

Team to keep an eye on: Cypress Bridgeland

I know they're ranked so they're not exactly falling under the radar, but this could be a special year for the Bears. Last week, 6A No. 23 Cypress Bridgeland held off a good Klein Cain program, 49-42, in a solid debut for the 2020 season. This week, the Bears captured perhaps their biggest win in the program’s brief history topping 6A No. 13 Alvin Shadow Creek, the defending 5A DI state champions.

The Sharks were without quarterback and Baylor commit Kyron Drones, but the Bears were also missing their team’s best skill position player, SMU commit receiver Dylan Goffney. Conner Weigman is an emerging talent in the recruiting ranks and looks to have Bridgeland on the right track to make noise in Houston.

On the other side of the field, Shadow Creek now has its first losing streak in its brief three-year history after last week’s defeat to 6A No. 1 Galena Park North Shore.

Social Media Highlights:

If the biggest school in the state can social distance inside Eagle Stadium properly, everyone can. Big time credit to Allen.

How about a game-winning Hail Mary throw from sophomore quarterback Isaiah DeLeon against Lockhart to give San Marcos its first win under John Walsh?

Are we sure Allen’s Payton Pierce is a freshman?!?

We mentioned Eastland’s Behren Morton earlier, but how about actually seeing one of his dimes?
