After nearly 20 years of success, Sam Houston State athletics is making major changes to the program branding. SHSU announced the new design on Thursday.
The new branding features a deeper orange and altered fonts. The primary logo features a similar “SH” with a paw in the middle, but without the blue outline for a sleeker look. The secondary logo is simply an orange bearkat paw with a white background, and vice versa. The mascot logo brings back the historic “Walking Sammy,” but modernized to match.
SME Branding started working on designs for the new logo in 2018. The subsidiary of IMG presented more than 20 concepts, according to a release. They sought input through interviews, tours of campus and experiences at athletic events.
“Working on this project was a personal and professional dream come true,” said Russell Martinez, associate athletic director for external relations in a statement. “I have been around Sam Houston State all of my life...one of my earliest memories of SHSU is Walking Sammy and to help bring him back in a new and modern way has been probably the most exciting and anticipated aspects of this project.”
The new branding means that new athletic uniforms are around the corner, which coincides with the start of SHSU’s partnership with Under Armour. In addition to the base orange and white, uniforms also have the option to include a black or gray trim. The uniforms will roll out in time for the 2020-21 athletic seasons.
The previous branding coincided with the most successful run in the history of the football team. The Bearkats made nine playoff appearances, including seven straight between 2011 and 2017, and a pair of national championship games.
