New Mexico State graduate transfer quarterback Josh Adkins has committed to UTSA. Adkins is immediately eligible as a graduate transfer and comes to San Antonio with two years of eligibility remaining.

Adkins threw for 5,151 yards, 27 touchdowns and 24 interceptions in two years as starting quarterback with the Aggies. Texas Football picked Adkins as the best Texan playing at an independent FBS program in the 2019 magazine.

With Adkins’ addition, the Roadrunners are set to have six quarterbacks on campus in the fall: Adkins, Frank Harris, Jordan Weeks, Lowell Narcisse, Suddin Sapien and 2020 recruit Cameron Peters. The first four have each started at least one college football game. Adkins is the first quarterback fully recruited by new coach Jeff Traylor.

Adkins was a known commodity coming out of nearby Smithson Valley, where he was rated as a three-star prospect at the time he inked with New Mexico State. He was named as the 6A San Antonio Player of the Year and followed that up with an MVP performance in the San Antonio Sports All-Star Game.

On the field, Adkins put up monster numbers in high school, passing for 6,831 yards and posting 100 total touchdowns in three seasons as a starter. He is not necessarily a dual-threat but has shown the ability to keep plays alive outside of the pocket.

The first thing that jumps out on Adkins' senior highlight tape is his arm strength, and that is something that has continued to develop as he has matured in the college strength and conditioning program.

Adkins can make all of the throws and has the type of arm that translates to the highest levels of college football, but he will need to continue to work on ball control and cut down on his INT ratio, but he is known in coaching circles as a smart, cerebral leader.

Adkins is a significant addition for the Roadrunners and he should be the type of QB who can give the offense an instant overhaul. He will compete with true dual-threats Harris and Narcisse for the starting quarterback job at his hometown college football program.
