SMU offensive coordinator Rhett Lashlee will leave for the same position at Miami, according to multiple reports. The Miami Herald first reported the news.

Lashlee helped turn SMU from an inconsistent offense to one of the best in college football during his time in Dallas. The Mustangs were No. 7 in scoring offense and No. 9 in total offense in his second season, as the program record the 10-win plateau for the first time in a generation.

Under Lashlee’s watch, wide receiver James Proche, running back Xavier Jones and quarterback Shane Buechele became all-conference first-team talents. The offense was notable for finding a strong balance between run (181 yards per game) and pass (309 yards per game).

Lashlee came to SMU after four years at Auburn working under Gus Malzahn. Lashlee was offensive coordinator when the Tigers went to the 2013 national championship game. In his lone season as a primary play caller before SMU, Lashlee pushed UConn from No. 122 to No. 49 in total offense.

The DCTF 40-under-40 member is tasked with fixing an offense at Miami that ranked No. 98 nationally under well-regarded offensive coordinator Dan Enos. The Hurricanes averaged 3.8 yards per carry as a team. Freshman Jarren Williams showed some promising signs at quarterback, but the Hurricanes still lost games against FIU and Louisiana Tech to close the year.

The SMU offensive coordinator job should be an attractive situation for any up-and-coming offensive minds. Head coach Sonny Dykes is an offensive-minded coach, but let Lashlee have control and direction of the offense. The Mustangs have an elite collection of NFL-caliber offensive talent, including Buechele and wide receiver Reggie Roberson.
