SAN ANTONIO -- UTSA will close out their season at home on Saturday when they take on Mason Fine and a dangerous North Texas team. The Mean Green have never won against UTSA in the Alamodome, but many expect that to change Saturday night. UNT is opening up as a 20-point favorite over UTSA so they’re heavily favored to ruin UTSA’s senior day and final home game of 2018.

UTSA has now been outscored 120-10 over their last three games in what has been a miserable home stretch to the season.

Despite the season not going well and many fans calling for his head, head coach Frank Wilson was positive and in good spirits when addressing the media on Monday. Wilson spoke about the bright future of UTSA football as well as what he’s expecting from UNT this weekend.

“Our better players are our younger players that are still new to the program,” said Wilson. “I’m very optimistic about our future and excited about where we’re going to go from this point on.”

It’s no secret that UTSA has an extremely young team. After the departure of key players like Marcus Davenport, Dalton Sturm and Josh Stewart last season, the team lost a lot of veteran leadership. This year there were many inexperienced players on the roster so you have to think that next year they’ll be better after getting this season under their belt.

During his time at LSU, Wilson was known as a top-notch recruiter. Since he’s been at UTSA, Wilson has done his best to keep that reputation and he has faith in the type of players he’s been able to bring in during his short time at UTSA so far.

While the team is young, there are still key seniors that will be leaving UTSA after this season such as Jalen Rhodes, Les Maruo and veteran punter Yannis Routsas.

Although not a senior, middle linebacker Josiah Tauaefa may forego his senior year to opt into the NFL draft, and may not play in the final game. In such a miserable season, Tauaefa has been a bright spot in the Roadrunner defense. He leads the team in tackles by a wide margin and was one of ten linebackers in the nation to be named as a semifinalist for the Butkis award. Tauaefa was the only player from outside a Power Five conference to be nominated for the award which speaks volumes for just how talented he is. UTSA will honor the seniors at their final home game and Wilson hopes they can give them a victory.

“We’re excited to give our seniors an opportunity to be victorious,” said Wilson. “That’s our aim this week, to send those guys out the right way.”

It's been a rough season for UTSA, but a win over North Texas would end the year on a high note. Click here for tickets to the UTSA vs UNT game.
