The State College of Mines and Metallurgy hit the football field for the first time in 1914 under head coach Tommy Dwyer. The school changed its name to Texas Western in 1949, and the following year, Brumbelow became head coach and went on to become the program's most successful head coach with a .651 winning percentage over seven seasons. Price ushered in a new era of stability of success from 2004-12, winning 40 games and appearing in three bowls. The Jones brothers took UTEP to another bowl in 2014, but the Miners have been trying to get back above .500 ever since.
