Denver City head coach Daniel Fontenot announced his retirement on Monday after a long coaching career in both the six-man game and eleven-man game.

Fontenot has spent the past 12 seasons in Denver City where he’s spent the past eight seasons as a head coach posting a solid 53-37 overall record, including a high-water mark of 10-2 in 2019. Fontenot led the Mustangs to three straight area round playoff appearances from 2018-2020.

Prior to becoming the AD/HFC at Denver City, Fontenot spent four seasons as the Mustangs offensive coordinator. He’s also spent time coaching at O’Donnell, Eden, Aransas Pass, Ozona and Jayton.

“It’s been an amazing run here," Fontenot said. "Denver City is such a supportive community. This is really a great job. Leaving the kids is the hardest part of this whole deal. I’ll miss that the most. Twelve years in one place isn’t common in this business so we are just really grateful."

As for what’s next for the now retired Denver City AD/HFC? 

“I’m gonna go to work with my brother running some hunting leases down in the San Angelo area," he said.

With the job opening late in the offseason, Denver City ISD has posted the vacancy on THSCA today with an application deadline of April 30.
