Comal ISD on Friday named Cypress Ranch head coach Sean McAuliffe as the next head football coach at New Braunfels Canyon, replacing Nate Leonard who stepped down after just one year to take over at McKinney High.

McAuliffe has extensive ties to the San Antonio area as he’s a graduate of Converse Judson High School. He’s best known for his five year run as Judson’s head coach from 2014-2018 where he posted an impressive 54-13 record leading the Rockets to a pair of state semifinal appearances in 2014 and 2015.

He's spent the last five years as Cy Ranch’s head coach where he compiled a 34-20 record. McAuliffe has spent time as an assistant coach at Judson, Kerrville Tivy, Lake Travis, San Antonio Holmes and Jersey Village.

McAuliffe takes over a New Braunfels Canyon squad that’s making the move to Class 6A in 2024 and will be under its third head coach in three seasons after Travis Bush left in December 2022 to take over as the first ever head coach at UT-Rio Grande Valley allowing Leonard to take over.

Cypress Ranch’s opening at head will without a doubt draw a lot of interest as Cy-Fair ISD is considered maybe the best large ISD to work for in the state and Cy Ranch is located in a talent-rich area.
