Breaking: UTSA to hire Alabama assistant Austin Claunch as next head coach

Dave Campbell’s can confirm that UTSA is expected to hire Alabama assistant Austin Claunch as its next men's basketball head coach. Alamo City Hoops was first to report Claunch being on UTSA’s radar earlier today.

A Houston-native, Claunch is finishing his first season alongside Alabama head coach Nate Oats after previously serving as head coach at Nicholls from 2018 until this past season. Claunch won the Southland Conference twice during his five-year tenure in Thibodaux, Louisiana where he also served as an assistant before Richie Riley was hired by South Alabama.

The former Strake Jesuit product will take over a UTSA program that had just one 20-win seasons in former head coach Steve Henson’s eight-year tenure.
