After over 40 years of stability in the coaching ranks, it appears a shakeup is imminent at Corpus Christi Calallen as AD/HFC Steve Campbell is expected to announce his retirement on Tuesday afternoon.

Campbell has been a mainstay at Calallen where he served as legendary head coach Phil Danaher’s defensive coordinator from 1984-2021 before stepping in to lead the Wildcats in 2022 after Danaher’s retirement due to health reasons.

In two years at the helm at Calallen, Campbell posted a 20-5 overall record. Calallen posted a 13-1 mark in 2022 and advanced to the 4A-Division I Regional Final and in 2023 Campbell led Calallen to a 7-4 mark before falling in the first round of the playoffs to Beeville Jones. Considering the legend he was replacing, Campbell did an excellent job keeping Calallen’s program among the best in South Texas.

Campbell’s departure leaves the Calallen job truly open for the first time since early 1984 when Danaher was hired. It’s widely understood that Calallen will likely conduct a wide-scale search for their next athletic director/head football coach.
