Baylor has added a veteran presence in the backroom of Dave Aranda’s staff with the addition of former TCU head coach Gary Patterson.

He’ll work as a senior level strategic consultant, working mostly on opponent breakdowns and self-scouting, according to sources.

Patterson and Aranda have a friendship that dates back prior to Baylor. SicEm365.com reported the news first.

Patterson was a long-time rival of the Baylor program. Him and former Baylor coach Art Briles had a feud that both fan bases fed off for years. In 2023, Kendal Briles, a former offensive coordinator at Baylor, became the offensive coordinator at TCU. Now, Patterson is at Baylor. Go back to 2015 and ask anyone in purple or university gold if they thought that was a possibility.

Patterson is one of the most respected minds in college football, especially in the coaching community. His success at TCU allowed the Horned Frogs to grow from a WAC program when he took over in 2000 to a perennial Big 12 contender by the time he left in 2021.

Aranda needs the 2024 season to be successful to remain coach at Baylor. He led the Bears to a 12-win season and a Big 12 championship in 2021, but his team posted a losing record in his other three years as a head coach in Waco. The defense allowed twice as many points in 2023 as it did in 2021.
