El Paso ISD has its first job opening of the offseason as Irvin head coach Joe Urias has stepped down after leading the Rockets program for eight seasons. The news was first reported by Felix Chavez from the El Paso Times.
In his eight years at the helm in Northeast El Paso, Urias led the Rockets to three playoff appearances in 2018, 2020 and 2022 and a district title in 2020.
Irvin, which dropped down to Class 4A-Division I in 2022, has seen a drop in enrollment over the past 20 or so years due to a number of factors, including an aging community and El Paso ISD opening Chapin High School in 2002 on post at Fort Bliss, previously a large portion of students who lived on post attended Irvin High School.
El Paso ISD is expected to post the position this week as it tries and fills the opening. The Rockets expect to be aligned into the El Paso area 4A-Division I district, which will likely be a large nine-team loop with fellow El Paso ISD programs in El Paso Austin and El Paso Bowie; Ysleta ISD programs El Paso Ysleta and El Paso Riverside and teams from El Paso County in San Elizario, Clint Mountain View, Clint, and Fabens.
