Updated at 1pm January 9 with the hiring of assistant coach Jason Hammett. 

Marshall head coach Jack Alvarez announced his retirement from coaching on Monday after a 26-year career where he posted a record of 205-104 with stops at West Sabine, Kirbyville, Ennis, Copperas Cove, Cuero and Marshall.

Heled Ennis to the 2014 Class 5A-Division II state championship.

“I just felt like it was time for me to hang ‘em up and go be a Pop-Pop to my grandkids," he said. "I’ve had an unbelievable career worked with some amazing coaches and had the pleasure of coaching incredible football players."

Alvarez spent the last two seasons leading the Mavericks posting 12-11 overall record. He led the Mavericks to an area round playoff appearance in 2023.

Aside from leading Ennis to the state championship on in 2014, Alvarez led Kirbyville to state title game appearances in 2008 and 2009 and led Ennis to the state semifinals in 2013 and Cuero to the state semifinals in 2021.

Marshall ISD quickly moved to replace Alvarez as Jason Hammett, who was the assistant athletic director and Alvarez's top assistant coach was promoted athletic director/head football coach, Hammett spent two seasons as the head coach at Copperas Cove for the 2020 and 2021 seasons.
