Corpus Christi Miller (11-0) vs. Edinburg Vela (10-1), 7 p.m. Friday at Edinburg’s Flores Stadium: Unbeaten Miller walks into a tough environment Friday night down in the Valley as the Bucs take on 10-1 Edinburg Vela, who most consider the second-best team in the RGV this year at the 5A level.

Miller didn’t have any trouble last week as they drilled overmatched Laredo Martin, 77-0. It was the Bucs’ first playoff shutout win since 1960. Five different players for Miller scored rushing touchdowns, with Broderick Taylor tallying three scores on the ground.

They’ll get a much tougher test this week down in Edinburg. Vela trailed early last week but hit the gas in the second quarter to roll past Weslaco East, 31-9. RB Jamal Polley led the way for the Sabercats with a pair of rushing touchdowns. A pick six from DB Brandon Cantu in the fourth quarter put the game out of reach.

Vela’s defense will be among the best Miller has seen this year and Polley is one of the most underrated backs out of South Texas. But Miller’s depth at the skill spots, improved defense and strong QB play with Trevor Long leading the way will put the Bucs into the regional semifinals.
